Indemini combines a protected historic village center with paths that tell the story of former mountain farming. The village is located in the Ticino municipality of Gambarogno at an altitude of 950 meters; an elevation range of 656 to 1,958 meters is given for the area. A particularly dense network of alleys and passageways shapes a walk through the village. Old paths lead to traces of the landscape around Monti Sciaga and Sant’Anna.

Gneiss, Paths and Village History

The historic village center is recognized as a settlement worthy of protection in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. Narrow, paved paths, steps and covered passageways form a labyrinth; the main settlement has a remarkably complex and exceptionally dense network of paths. The building material also defines the village: Indemini is the only typical Ticino village built entirely from gneiss quarried locally. Around the village, old paths and dry-stone walls bear witness to a landscape shaped by centuries of use. Some sections are subject to conservation work.

Indemini was first mentioned in 1213 as “Indempono” and in 1260 as “Indemine.” The St. Anna Pass was also historically significant to the village’s strategic location: in the Middle Ages, it was made passable for soldiers; it did not become suitable for vehicles until the 20th century. A road connection between Indemini and Biegno in Veddasca opened to tourist traffic in 1965.

Churches, Chapel and Museum

The Church of San Bartolomeo dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt in the 19th century. Inside are frescoes from the second half of the 19th century. The Chapel of San Luigi is a cantonal protected cultural property. Covered passageways along municipal paths and the Canvetti in Boé and Sciaga are also protected. Indemini’s cultural heritage is thus reflected not only in individual religious buildings, but also in the paths and other historic buildings in the village.

The Indemini Patriziale Museum houses a permanent photographic exhibition on the history of the village. It includes reproductions of family, social and religious scenes, as well as photographs of the Indemini region and its buildings. Temporary interruptions to the exhibition are possible.

Old Paths and Traces of the Landscape

The path between Indemini and Scïága was once used for transhumance and bears witness to the area’s agricultural and spiritual past. Monti Sciaga can only be reached on foot via two old paths starting from Indemini and Idacca. The area preserves traces of subsistence farming in the mountains: hay meadows, pastures, crops, paths, springs, mills and Canvetti are all part of this cultural landscape. Between Indemini and Scïága, the old village mill stands on the banks of the Torrente Giona; it is abandoned and in need of restoration.

The Sentiero del Monte Gambarogno leads from Alpe di Neggia via Colle di Sant’Anna and its oratory to Indemini. The route is 8 km long and takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. Seasonal closures may occur; check the route and conditions before setting out. Colle di Sant’Anna can also be reached on foot from Indemini.

The original Oratorio della Madonna del Monte at Sant’Anna was built between 1300 and 1400 as a chapel and refuge where passersby could pray and rest. The chapel’s fresco was restored under the direction of the cantonal office for historic monuments. The Festa sul Colle di S. Anna is a recurring festival popular with residents of Gambarogno and the Locarnese. For the 2026 edition, a Mass at 11 a.m. followed by a procession with the statue of Saint Anne was scheduled; future programs may differ.
