On the northeastern shore of Lake Maggiore, Vira lies in the municipality of Gambarogno. Here, the old village centre and its protected buildings are as much a part of the local character as the lido on the lake and the routes leading from the shore towards the mountains. If you are looking for a destination where culture, scenery and activities on the water come together, Vira offers several distinct points of interest.
From the lakeshore to the mountain forests
Vira’s landscape stretches from the lakeshore across hills and up into the mountains. Chestnut forests first shape the area; higher up, impressive beech forests take over. You can keep this transition in mind when choosing what to do: in the village, the lakeshore and public lido are the main attractions, while paths to higher elevations offer a different perspective on the surroundings. Vira is therefore not only a destination for days by the water, but also a gateway to forest and mountain landscapes.
Lanes, frescoes and protected buildings
In its village centre, Vira preserves old, closely packed houses, narrow lanes and arcades. The façade frescoes on buildings there are protected as cultural heritage of local interest. Also protected are the parish church of SS. Pietro e Paolo and its churchyard, the Oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena, and the old Franciscan monastery. A late medieval house with a fresco of the Madonna and Child between two saints is also among the protected cultural heritage sites; a 17th-century bourgeois house adds to these historic landmarks.
The bell tower of the church of Santa Maria Maddalena is also protected, as a natural monument of national importance. Vira’s stone railway bridge dates from 1948 and is also protected cultural heritage. Another trace of the past is route TI179.0.1, designated in Vira as cultural heritage of regional interest. The church of San Pietro overlooks Lake Maggiore. Together, these buildings and details of the village give a walk through the lanes a cultural focus, without requiring any single building to tell the whole story of the place.
Art, local products and food and drink
Vira has a long tradition of artistic events in the lanes of the village centre. There are also specific local options for a tasty stop: Ristorante Rodolfo has a historic 17th-century wine cellar where tastings can be held. Bar Tennis Vira makes its own ice cream and cream ice cream, as well as lactose-free fruit sorbets, using natural, high-quality products. This lets you include cultural walks and local food experiences in your travel plans without having to turn them into a fixed itinerary.
Getting around by the lake and on the trails
Vira has a public lido on the lake. At Shaka Beach, you can go stand-up paddleboarding; this water activity may be seasonal. There is also a vending machine there stocked exclusively with Ticino products, with particular emphasis on products from the Gambarogno region. The lido, water sports and local products each offer a different way to enjoy the lakeshore.
If you would rather plan a longer route through the landscape, there are several described options. The Alpe di Neggia–Poncino della Croce–Vira Gambarogno route is 11.4 kilometres long, offers panoramic views and runs mostly along paths. It leads through the forest down to the lower part of Vira by the lake. Another trail leads from Vira to the Alpe di Neggia pass, at an elevation of 1,395 metres, which leads into the Veddasca Valley; the route is suitable for hiking and mountain biking.
The “Tra Monti e Lago” educational trail runs between Fosano and Magadino, passing through Vira. Around 40 themed panels cover historical, geographical and scientific topics, as well as traditional occupations, new settlements, nature parks and recreational areas. So, alongside the buildings in the village centre, there is a route whose themes range from history to the landscape. You can reach Alpe di Neggia from Vira by bus; from the lower part of Vira, you can travel by bus, train or boat.
When looking for a hotel in Vira, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: protected buildings and lanes, activities by the lake, or routes between the shore and the mountains. These different interests can guide your choice without needing to be combined into a fixed daily itinerary.
