Dense forests, gorges and rushing water define the Valle Onsernone. If you want to explore the area, you can plan your stay around the outings you have in mind: a one-day mountain hike takes you through the more remote part of the valley, while museums, mills and historic trails offer insights into its cultural heritage.

Hiking through forests and mountain scenery

The Onsernone Forest Reserve covers 781 hectares and was established in 2002. It is one of Switzerland’s largest forest reserves. Beech and mixed deciduous forests, silver fir stands and larch forests extend up to the upper tree line at around 2,000 metres. Commercial use is prohibited in the reserve; gathering mushrooms and berries and hunting are still permitted.

A one-day mountain hike leads from Spruga via Alpe Saléi to Comologno. The route passes the alpine Laghetto di Salèi, where you can cool off on hot summer days; you can also climb Pizzo Zucchero. In Comologno, the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the chapels along its Stations of the Cross are possible stops. The Stations of the Cross are considered a short pilgrimage route. Weather and the season can affect hiking conditions.

If you want to allow more time for a tour, Vergeletto–Capanna Ribia–Vergeletto is a challenging two-day route that starts and ends in Vergeletto. It passes through beech and birch forests and, from Alp del Pianaccio onwards, through larch forest that turns golden yellow in autumn. The one-day hike from Spruga and this two-day tour therefore differ clearly in the time they require. Another option is the hike from Vergeletto to Capanna Alzasca via Alpe di Doia and Bocchetta di Doia, continuing to Lago d’Alzasca and the hut.

Mills, straw processing and village history

The Museo Onsernonese is at the entrance to the village of Loco and tells the history of Onsernone in ten exhibition rooms. It is one of the eleven regional ethnographic museums recognised by the Canton of Ticino. The collections cover, among other topics, the straw industry, traditional women’s clothing, emigration, farming, everyday life and sacred art. European cultural figures with connections to Onsernone are also represented.

In Loco, the restored mill has been grinding maize into polenta flour with historic millstones since 1991. The Museo Onsernonese also supports the revival of Farina BĂłna, an aromatic flour made from finely ground roasted maize kernels. Information panels at the Parco dei Mulini di Vergeletto provide insights into the history of the mills; the park is open year-round and can be visited without a guide. Guided tours cover the history of the place and the production of Farina BĂłna. As visitor information may change, it is advisable to check the details before travelling.

Straw processing is another topic to explore in Berzona. The settlement and its terraces are considered a valuable natural and cultural heritage site and bear witness to agro-pastoral subsistence farming. At Pagliarte, you can watch a straw hat being sewn and learn more about traditional processing during a guided visit that includes local specialities. Check booking details before your trip. The workshop shop sells traditional and modern hats, as well as bags, belts, placemats and children’s crowns.

In Comologno, historic patrician residences such as Palazzo della Barca are among the architectural sights; access to the interiors may vary. The Via delle Vose offers a different glimpse into the past: the Loco–Vosa–Intragna hike follows the old market road of the Valle Onsernone. In the past, valley residents used the mule track to transport goods to the port of Ascona and the market in Locarno.

Getting there and planning outings

From Locarno station, you can take PostBus 324 towards Spruga. Route numbers and timetables may change, so check your connection before departure. To help plan your time in the area, consider how the outings differ: the route from Spruga combines mountain scenery, an alpine lake and stops in Comologno, while the Via delle Vose pairs the history of old routes with a hike between Loco, Vosa and Intragna.
