Woodcraft, a municipal press with the year 1609 carved into it, and an orienteering course between Tegna, Verscio and Cavigliano offer different highlights in Cavigliano. There is also a municipal nature garden. When planning your visit, you can choose between cultural history, a hands-on craft activity and outdoor exercise as different areas of focus.
Wood and woodturning
The Museo del Legno Ticino in Cavigliano is housed in a restored old barn. It is the first wood museum and the first woodturning school in Ticino. The museum includes a xylotheque with local and exotic wood species, broadening its focus on woodturning with an insight into the material itself. The museum and woodturning school thus bring together two aspects of wood: a collection and skilled craftwork.
During the WoodTurning Experience, visitors can work at a lathe and take home an object they have made themselves. Unlike viewing the xylotheque, this activity puts hands-on work at the centre. Check whether the Experience is available during your visit before booking. Admission to the museum is free when the workshop is open; take this condition into account when planning.
The Torchio municipal press
The Torchio Comunale di Cavigliano municipal press is one of the oldest examples in the canton of Ticino and is open to the public. The year 1609 is carved into its main beam; it may refer to the year it was built or to a major repair. The inscription is a striking historical detail, but it does not establish the exact meaning of the date. Check current access arrangements before travelling. While the xylotheque contains various wood species, the Torchio centres on a single historic press.
A municipal nature garden
The first municipal nature garden was established in Cavigliano in 2012, next to the FART station. It adds a landscape-focused highlight to the craft and historical themes and serves as a distinct point of interest in the selection.
Orienteering between three places
The permanent orienteering course runs between Tegna, Verscio and Cavigliano and includes 44 checkpoints shown on maps. The routes vary in length and are suitable for walking, running or cycling. When choosing, you can therefore consider two specific differences: route length and your preferred way of getting around. The checkpoints and route lengths describe different aspects of the course: the 44 checkpoints are marked on maps, while the routes vary in length. Before setting out, check route availability, route materials and trail conditions.
Between viewing and taking part
When choosing what suits you, consider not only the subject but also the type of activity: the museum focuses on wood species and woodturning, while the Torchio is a single historic object bearing a date whose meaning is not clear. The WoodTurning Experience offers the chance to work at a lathe; orienteering is a different active option, with variations in route length and mode of travel.
