Sonogno is a locality in the municipality of Verzasca in the canton of Ticino. The village combines a well-preserved historic centre with a museum and wool crafts. This offers different options for planning a trip: culture in the village or, when there is enough snow, cross-country skiing. Sonogno lies at 919 metres above sea level.

Museum and history

The Museo di Val Verzasca is in Sonogno, at the start of the road that runs through the village and continues into Val Redorta. Guided tours last about 1.5 hours and are offered in Italian, German, French or English. This makes it easy to plan a museum visit as a standalone activity. One exhibition explores the history of chimney-sweeping children in the Verzasca Valley and the topic of children’s rights.

A visit to the museum adds a cultural and historical dimension to exploring the village. Those particularly interested in the valley’s history can combine it with a walk through the historic centre, where distinctive houses and lanes shape the village’s appearance. In the upper part of the historic centre, a rustic house features a mural depicting the Last Judgment. The artist is unknown; the work dates from the 18th century.

Wool processing and local crafts

Sheep’s wool processing is another distinctive feature of Sonogno. At Casa della Lana, craftspeople turn wool into handcrafted products by carding, dyeing and spinning it. Spinning courses are also offered there. Pro Verzasca offers guided tours explaining the different stages of wool processing, from shearing through carding and dyeing to spinning. The tours and spinning courses have different focuses: the tours explain the sequence of work stages, while the courses focus on spinning.

Casa della Lana offers a simple felting workshop for school groups. It is suitable for children from the third year of primary school and takes place under the guidance of the class teacher. The workshop is a specific option for an organised school visit. The old bread oven, not far from the village square, also reflects local craftsmanship: it is still in use today.

Routes and seasonal activities

Mountain bikers can include the Alta Verzasca Bike route in their plans. SwissMobil Route 399 runs from Brione Verzasca to Sonogno. The wider landscape of the Valle Verzasca includes the Verzasca River and smooth-worn gorges and pools that invite visitors to swim in summer. This description refers to the valley as a whole.

In winter, cross-country skiing depends explicitly on snow conditions. When there is enough snow, a blue trail about 500 metres long is available south of the village, near the municipal car park. The red trail is about 5 kilometres long and runs along Val Redorta; its use also requires sufficient snow and may depend on conditions.

Getting there and finding accommodation

Sonogno can be reached from Locarno railway station on AutoPostale route 321. Check the timetable before setting off. If you are looking for a hotel in Sonogno, use the purpose of your trip as a guide: the museum, village history and wool crafts are the cultural highlights, while cross-country skiing is an option that depends on snow conditions. Snow conditions are especially important when the trail is to be a major part of your plans.
