Monte Carasso lies west of Bellinzona, at the entrance to the deeply incised Sementina Valley. Medieval frescoes, an archaeological settlement and routes to higher elevations give a stay here a range of different focuses. You can shape your trip around architecture and history or make a hike through the mountain landscape its centrepiece.
A district between the plain and higher elevations
Monte Carasso is now a district of the municipality of Bellinzona in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Until 1 April 2017, it was an independent political municipality. The district lies on the right bank of the Ticino River in the Magadino Plain. The former municipal territory stretched from the Ticino at an elevation of 222 m in the south to Cima d’Erbea at 2,338 m in the north. This wide range of elevations describes the former municipal territory, not a single location.
Church, architecture and archaeological traces
The oldest frescoes in the Church of San Barnárd date from the mid-14th century; they include the Madonna del Latte and San Cristoforo. In the Bellinzona area, the church is among the small group of monuments of national importance in Category A. It can be reached by cable car or on foot and is about a 15-minute walk from Curzútt, the first stop on the Monte Carasso–Mornera cable car. Access may vary seasonally, so check before your visit.
An architectural tour illustrates the most significant interventions arising from the new planning concepts applied in Monte Carasso. The Monte Carasso project received the Wakker Prize in 1993. Alongside the area’s older architectural history, you can also explore local architectural planning.
The Puncètè archaeological zone was probably already inhabited around the year 1000. The settlement consisted of about twenty buildings; only the “grà” has survived. The site was enhanced by securing the ruins, restoring the surviving “grà” and improving the surrounding cultural landscape, with its terraces, boundary walls and chestnut groves. Here, traces of an early settlement sit alongside features of a cultivated landscape.
Hikes, a bridge and a via ferrata
The hike from Mornera to Albagno passes the small Pian di Nar pond and reaches Capanna Albagno UTOE at an elevation of 1,864 m. Mountain conditions can affect accessibility. If you are planning this hike, check conditions before setting out.
The 270 m-long Carasc Tibetan Bridge crosses the difficult valley between Monte Carasso and Sementina. It connects Curzútt and S. Bernardo with the Via delle Vigne and provides opportunities for hiking. The Via Ferrata dei Tre Signori is a different option: it consists of three routes of varying difficulty, connected by a suspended footbridge. The via ferrata is in the Sasso Torrasco area between Mornera and Albagno, in the Sementina Gorge, with views towards the Magadino Plain. A helmet and via ferrata equipment, including a harness and lanyards, are required for the route.
