Isone is in the Bellinzona district of the canton of Ticino. Nature and mountain walking trails, mountain bike routes with different surfaces, a viewpoint at Cima Matro, and protected cultural heritage give the area a variety of facets. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether you would rather spend your time on trails and cycling, taking in a panoramic view, or exploring local history.
Trails and Cycling
Isone has numerous trails for walks in nature and the mountains. A map in front of the patrician house at the Isone paese PostAuto stop shows the main trails. If you include walks in your plans, you can use this specific landmark to get an overview of the trails.
Mountain bike routes are another option in the area. Some run along paved roads, while others follow gravel roads and trails. When comparing routes, the surface is a clear point of difference: the options include both paved and unpaved sections.
There is a bicycle charging station in the town centre, next to the church. It adds a specific landmark in town to the information about cycling routes.
Landscape and Views
The ZPP 1 Matro – Alpe del Tiglio landscape protection zone is designated for shared public use for recreation and pedestrian and bicycle traffic, while respecting private property rights. To understand the area, both aspects matter: its intended shared use and the express reservation of private property rights.
From the panoramic swing near Cima Matro, the view extends across the Magadino plain. The panoramic swing at Cima Matro in Isone has been there since summer 2023; a picnic table stands right beside it. The view and the table are two specific features of the same named spot, where you can combine a panorama with a break.
The forested areas also offer a dated snapshot of the landscape: in 1997, 64.7 percent of the municipality’s area was forested, making forest the predominant land cover. This figure describes the situation at that time and adds a time-specific perspective to the immediate impressions of trails and views.
Cultural Heritage and Local History
The bell tower of the parish church of S. Lorenzo is protected as a cultural asset of cantonal interest. The Cappella “Maestà ” is considered a cultural asset of local interest. The classifications therefore differ: the tower is protected at cantonal level, and the chapel at local level.
The fortifications at Monte Ceneri lie above the village of Isone. Their historical and architectural quality, together with their military equipment, accounts for their national significance. A separate point of interest is trail 05 Monte Ceneri–Cima di Medeglia–Alpe del Tiglio, part of the ForTI – Fortificazioni Ticinesi project, which passes through the municipality of Isone.
Isone has been home to the Swiss Army’s grenadier school since 1970. This is another specific connection to the area’s history.
A Eucharistic celebration in honour of the Madonna Assunta is traditionally held at the Cappella MaestĂ on 15 August, followed by lunch. The municipal calendar listed the event for 15 August 2026. If you would like to include this occasion in a future trip, check the details for the relevant year.
