An underpass beneath a motorway was transformed on the Via del Ceneri into a gallery showcasing three centuries of transport history. This offers a tangible starting point for exploring Cadenazzo; local history, a historic mill, and mountain biking and freestyle sports provide further themes for your stay.
Via del Ceneri: a hiking trail with a story
The Via del Ceneri is an educational hiking trail with a cultural focus. It runs from Passo del Ceneri, at Piazza Ticino, to Cadenazzo railway station. Along the route, informative and educational panels explain the history of the villages and forests of Ceneri. The gallery in the converted motorway underpass is also part of the trail: it reconstructs three centuries of transport history and development. The history of the villages and forests is presented alongside a broader perspective on transport.
Ceneri Bike and woodland landscapes
The Ceneri Bike mountain-bike route runs from Cadenazzo railway station via the Pedemontano cycle path No. 311 to Sant’Antonino. The route reaches Monti dei Bassi along an easy forest road that passes through a chestnut grove and an arboretum. After Robasacco, it continues through the Pontiva chestnut grove to the Monte Ceneri military area. Signage and conditions may vary; check both before setting out.
The difference in perspective makes it easy to choose between the routes: the Via del Ceneri focuses on the history of villages, forests and transport, while Ceneri Bike focuses on the mountain-bike route and the woodland landscapes described here.
Antico Mulino e pesta del Precassino
The site is open to the public, tourists and schools. On 16 May 2026, the Antico Mulino del Precassino took part in the Swiss Mill Day for the second year in a row. The event takes place annually, when mills across Switzerland open their doors to visitors. The historic site consisted of a mill with grinding stones and a stamp mill with two mortars.
Freestyle Park Ticino
Freestyle Park Ticino in Cadenazzo promotes BMX, skateboarding and scooter riding. It has an Olympic-sized facility and has already hosted several European and Swiss BMX freestyle championships. Alongside hiking and mountain biking, it offers a dedicated focus on freestyle sports; the championships are part of the park’s history to date.
Putting Cadenazzo’s history in context
Cadenazzo became an autonomous parish in 1830; until 1442, it belonged to the parish of Bellinzona. Residents were obliged to look after the church of S. Pietro di Cadenazzo. The local economy in earlier times included livestock farming, the cultivation of rye, maize, potatoes, walnuts and grapevines, as well as the raising of sheep and silkworms. Cadenazzo once had a castle; it was probably destroyed during the Italian Wars.
The history of the landscape also provides context: historic settlement developed along the alluvial fans of the Pianturina, Robasacco and Ruscadella streams. In the plain near Cadenazzo, the Ticino once flowed freely before it was channelled; the plain was also affected by flooding. According to one historical geographical interpretation, Cadenazzo lay on an important transit route to the lakeside settlements of Lugano and Magadino, from which goods arrived in earlier times.
