Gorduno combines medieval traces and church art with trails leading up into the mountains. Gorduno and Bellinzona are in the canton of Ticino. Two distinct aspects are central to planning your visit: the history and architecture in the village, and hikes around Alpe Arami.

Castle Traces and Church Art

The ruins of a medieval castle stand near San Carpoforo in Gorduno. Archaeological investigations on the summit of the castle hill also uncovered the remains of an early medieval ring wall and the base of a tower. The castle may have been destroyed or dismantled following the victory at Arbedo in 1422.

Gorduno is first mentioned in 1182. The Barons of Sax built a castle there; since 1583, Gorduno has had a parish independent of Bellinzona. The church of SS. Carpoforo e Maurizio, on the hill north of the village, tells another story of its early history: restoration excavations from 1994 to 1997 revealed that its first sacred building dates from the 7th or 8th century and was part of a small fortified complex.

In the Chiesa dei SS. Rocco e Sebastiano, an imposing longitudinal building with a choir meets a bell tower crowned with a pyramidal roof. The architrave of the Renaissance portal bears a low relief of the Madonna with the patron saints. Inside are fragments of late Gothic frescoes, possibly attributed to the Seregnesi workshop.

The choir of the church of SS. Carpoforo e Maurizio also has its own pictorial history: it contains medieval frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of the patron saints. They have been heavily reworked. Visitors interested in the connection between architectural history and sacred art will find details from different periods that can be viewed separately during a visit.

Alpe Arami and Hiking Opportunities

Alpe Arami is a small alpine pasture in the mountains above Gorduno. Its spectacular terrace lies at an altitude of 1,500 metres and offers views of the Bellinzonese and the Riviera. A hike called “Trekking verso la Capanna Albagno” passes through Alpe Arami and then descends to Gorduno. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Baita Arami is in Gorduno, in the municipality of Bellinzona, at an altitude of 1,456 metres. It welcomes visitors to a spectacular terrace at the foot of Gaggio. From there, hikes can be taken to Capanna Albagno, along various local trails and along the Via Alta della Verzasca. These options can be planned according to your preferred route; no specific hiking times are provided for the individual routes.

There is also a described walking route for reaching the hut: Baita Arami’s parking area is accessible by car, and from there it is a ten-minute walk to the hut. Road and parking conditions may change. Check the situation before driving and factor current trail conditions into your plans.

Baita Arami is listed as offering food made with local products; details may change. The altitude figures refer to different places: 1,456 metres for Baita Arami and 1,500 metres for the terrace at Alpe Arami. This helps distinguish a hut visit, the views and hiking as separate aspects of a mountain stay, rather than mistaking them for a fixed sequence of tours.

Local Cuisine and an Annual Tradition

In the historic village centre, Ristorante Antichi Sapori serves pasta and fish; there is also a selection of wines from Ticino and Italy. As the offerings may change, check the details before your visit. Cantina Magiro offers tastings and dinners by prior reservation. Be sure to plan ahead if you would like to dine there.

A recurring custom is also part of the local annual calendar: every year for Epiphany, the Gruppo dei Tre Re goes through the streets of Gorduno and Galbisio on the eve of the holiday, visiting houses and singing a verse of the traditional song of the Three Wise Men. This is a seasonal cultural highlight, while the castle and church art independently shape the village’s historical character.

Plan the Right Stay

Conditions on the mountain trails are important; for tastings or dinner at Cantina Magiro, planning ahead includes making a reservation.
