Three marked running routes of different lengths, a trail with eight viewpoints and a museum with exhibitions on three levels give you concrete starting points for planning a trip to Mörschwil. There are also historic sites and trails through the countryside. Depending on your interests, you can give different emphasis to local history, exercise and views.
Mörschwil between the village centre and Lake Constance
Mörschwil is in the Rorschach district, immediately east of the city of St. Gallen. The municipality includes scattered hamlets and a small village centre. It lies between the Goldach and Steinach rivers and extends to Lake Constance. The hillsides offer views of the lake.
The natural surroundings, with woods, fields and streams, offer opportunities for walks and bike rides.
Running routes and scenic trails
The “Mörschwil bewegt” programme includes marked running routes of 3, 4.5 and 7 kilometres. They all start at Seeblick sports hall and follow quiet roads and hiking trails. The three distances give you a clear choice of route. If conditions change, check the signs on site.
The Gucklochweg trail features eight viewpoints. Its viewing holes frame different sections of the landscape: you might see a group of buildings, a prominent landscape feature, a transport route or even a city. Unlike the running routes, whose lengths are specified, the framed views are the trail’s distinctive point of interest.
Published in 2021, the “Raus aus der Stadt” hiking trail passes blossoming fruit trees, meadows and views of the lake, then goes past Watt Castle to Mörschwil and on towards Horn. Its described route thus combines scenic impressions with a trail that passes through several places. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
Plan visits and explore local history
The museum presents exhibitions on firefighting, agriculture and local trades across three levels. It is open by appointment; arrange your visit in advance. This is especially helpful if you want to make the museum visit a fixed part of your day.
Watt Castle was first mentioned in 1273 and was once owned by the Württemberg general von Spitzenberg. The renovated Church of St. John the Baptist is also a sight along the St. Gallen–Mörschwil–Horn hiking route. If you want to see inside the church, check access in advance.
Include farm activities in your plans
Eberle – DieStraussenfarm offers larger groups, by prior arrangement, refreshments in its party room, featuring meat specialities from the ostrich farm. A guided tour of the farm is included in the price. Advance booking is therefore part of planning this group activity.
Mörschwil’s ostrich farm also has an 18-hole XXL golf course. Players putt through various obstacles among sheep and ostriches. Check the booking details before your visit.
The route lengths, viewpoints and visiting arrangements offer different practical ways to choose activities. You can use them to decide whether your stay should focus on a particular running distance, views of the landscape, local history or a farm activity that needs to be planned in advance.
