Niederwil lies at 545 m above sea level on the lower southern slope of the Jura, at the foot of the Chamben and in the Unterleberberg region. The village belongs to the Lebern district in the canton of Solothurn and has been part of the municipality of Riedholz since 2011; until 2010, it was an independent municipality. Niederwil is about 5.5 kilometres as the crow flies north-northeast of Solothurn. For orientation, it is best to distinguish between the administrative level and the landscape: Riedholz refers to the municipal affiliation, while Unterleberberg is the regional designation.

Location and landscape

The valley basin of the Gummenbach runs from west to east between the Weissenstein range to the north and the Verenakette to the south. The Siggern flows into the valley hollow, and below the village the Gummenbach joins the Siggern. The valley’s west–east course adds a second point of reference to the village’s southern-slope location.

Hiking route and mountain access

The road from Niederwil climbs steeply to Balm and GĂĽnsberg, then continues from there to Oberbalmberg at 1,078 m above sea level. Mountain access is subject to seasonal conditions; check the conditions before setting out by car. The difference in elevation between Niederwil at 545 m and Oberbalmberg gives the road a clear relationship to the landscape. The stated elevations differ by 533 m.

The Solothurn–Niederwil loop offers another way to explore the area. At the old Oele in Niederwil, it crosses the Gumme and then follows a short climb to Riedholz. The loop follows marked hiking trails and is rated T1. The crossing and climb provide clear points of reference along the route. It is accessible by train and bus. Check current timetables before travelling and route information before setting out, as conditions or mapping may change.

The two details answer different planning questions: for the loop, the key points are trail markings, its T1 rating and access by train and bus; for the road, the elevation destination at Oberbalmberg and seasonal conditions are decisive.

Cultural history and nature

Gummenstock at Gumme 1 in Niederwil is a specific cultural landmark. In the edition of the Swiss Federal Inventory of Cultural Property published in 2021, it is listed under category B. This adds a named inventory entry to the description of the landscape and trails.

Another historical connection leads to GĂĽnsberg: a cableway transported gypsum from Bergli in GĂĽnsberg to the gypsum factory in Niederwil. This former transport link connects the two places in industrial history and adds a regional economic history theme to the local context.

A conservation objective is to preserve habitats for adapted animal and plant species, particularly amphibians and dragonflies.
