Balm bei Günsberg is in the Lebern district, above Günsberg on the southern foothills of the Weissenstein. The lower part of the village lies at around 600 m above sea level; the municipality extends up to the Jura heights of the Balmberg. At 1,395 m above sea level, the Röti is the highest viewpoint in the municipality of Balm. The Balmberg offers views across the Central Plateau and towards the Alps.
Village, Balmberg and landscape
Woodlands, open fields and high-altitude trails shape the surrounding area. The natural landscape invites you to hike, take walks and relax in the countryside. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the lower part of the village and the heights around the Balmberg: the Balmberg is a starting point for various hikes and combines views across the landscape with practical options for a walking excursion.
Hikes with different planning details
One varied hike takes about 1.5 hours from the Weissenstein via the Röti to the Balmberg. In the wider area, the Balmberg–Röti circular hike is also listed as 8.9 km long, with 510 m of ascent. These details help with different planning questions: an approximate duration is given for the first route, and distance and ascent for the circular hike. These are details for different routes, not two measurements of the same route. Before setting off, check the route you have chosen and the current trail conditions.
Activities by season and group
In winter, the Balmberg offers opportunities for skiing and snowboarding; both depend on the season and snow conditions. If winter sports are a focus of your trip, take these conditions into account when planning your dates.
The Balmberg high ropes course currently has 12 courses of varying difficulty and 242 platforms. It is suitable for outdoor enthusiasts, families, groups and clubs. Thanks to a special safety system, children as young as four can take part. Check the current age and safety requirements before your visit.
Archaeological traces and local history
The Balm cave castle is located at the foot of the Balmfluh, above the village of the same name. Individual archaeological finds indicate that the site was inhabited as early as prehistoric times. Another archaeological reference concerns Unter der Fluh: the revision of the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property Protection dated 24 March 2026 lists the site as a Palaeolithic rock shelter settlement in Balm bei Günsberg.
First mentioned in medieval documents, Balm bei Günsberg was historically shaped by livestock farming and arable agriculture. The archaeological finds and the later written mention offer different perspectives on the village’s history: the former provide evidence of prehistoric settlement, while the latter marks the beginning of the documentary record.
