Buchrain has many different sides: in the Schachen area and along the Rotbach, river remnants and wetland vegetation are among the defining features of the natural environment; the literary sculpture trail brings together art and books. There are also paths and fitness trails, leisure activities on the Reuss and seasonal events. When deciding what to do, you can choose whether to focus on nature, exercise, literature or puzzles.

Landscapes along the Reuss and Rotbach

The Buchrain Schachen is one of the richest parts of the Lucerne Reuss plain. Numerous remnants of the former natural river landscape have been preserved there. The Iris meadow is a distinctive plant habitat: together with the marshland areas on the Rooter Unterallmend, it remains the most significant purple moor-grass meadow in the entire Lucerne Reuss Valley. Several endangered plant species, including orchids, grow in the Iris meadow.

The Rotbach has a natural character and is accompanied by marsh vegetation in many places. Its undercut banks, with exposed areas of soil, provide ideal nesting opportunities for various insect species and the kingfisher. South of Chänzeliweiher there is also an old river channel that serves as an important refuge for some animal species. These varied natural features range from the river landscape and its remnants to specific habitats for plants and animals.

Get active on paths and fitness trails

Buchrain has numerous walking, hiking, cycling and riding trails. More than 50 benches throughout the municipality invite you to stop and rest. The Rontaler Höhenweg was created as a joint project by Buchrain, Dierikon, Ebikon, Gisikon, Honau, Inwil and Root, together with LuzernPlus. There are access points and public transport stops along the trail, so you can also choose shorter sections. This allows you to limit your hike to a particular section instead of planning to walk the entire Höhenweg.

For a workout on a dedicated fitness trail, head to the Vitaparcours in Cholbenwald. It is free and open around the clock, with exercises for strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination. If you prefer a more playful outing, try the Buchrain Detective Trail: this puzzle walk combines games, treats and brain-teasing fun, and starts at the “Buchrain Dorf” bus stop.

Literature, sculptures and meeting places

The literary sculpture trail in Buchrain features 14 sculptures, each connected to a literary work. The figurative works are made of stone and bronze. The associated books can be borrowed from the library.

Another cultural venue is the former parish church of St. Agatha. Since 2021, the “AltBar Bueri” association has used it as a meeting place, for cultural events and as a bar; this use is currently planned to continue until 2029. This timeframe is part of the venue’s current history of use and should be distinguished from the offerings on the sculpture trail.

Seasonal activities and events

In summer, the barbecue areas along the Reuss offer opportunities to grill and eat outdoors with friends and family. The beach volleyball court in Hinterleisibach is also mentioned as a warm-weather option for sport and relaxation. Eight groynes along the Reuss invite visitors to relax and picnic. The more than 50 benches around the municipality add to these options in various locations.

The traditional Bueri Chilbi takes place on the last weekend of October. The Beerday Bueri is also scheduled for 24 October 2026 at the Dorfschulhaus Buchrain. Five Swiss craft breweries will present their beers there. As this information relates to the 2026 edition and programme details may change, check the event information before travelling.
