On the southern shore of Lake Baldegg, Hochdorf offers different ways to enjoy a stay: at Ronfeld, habitats and wildlife observation take centre stage, while information panels in town introduce historic buildings and fountains. A local museum, a cultural centre and S-Bahn connections round out the nature and cultural attractions. You can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.

Nature at Lake Baldegg: observe wildlife or learn as you explore

Ronfeld is a natural area on the southern shore of Lake Baldegg in Hochdorf, enhanced by Pro Natura. Improvements included two large flood basins with fluctuating water levels, the conversion of nutrient-rich meadows into flower-rich meadows, and newly planted woody vegetation. An observation hut built in 2007 lets visitors watch white storks, kingfishers, grey herons and dragonflies hunting insects without disturbing them. From April to October, Pro Natura Lucerne offers supervised observation sessions there once a month; check the latest dates before your trip.

The Pro Natura nature discovery trail at Lake Baldegg offers a different way to experience nature. The 4.06-kilometre themed trail runs between Hochdorf station and Baldegg station. Five marked observation stations use richly illustrated panels to explain habitats and typical animal and plant species. The natural gravel path is suitable for pushchairs and for the whole family. While the observation hut focuses on individual animals, the trail shares information about different habitats and species.

Local history on a walking tour and at the museum

Information panels at 31 historic buildings and two fountains in Hochdorf explain their historical significance, architecture, and past and present uses. The Historic Walking Tour brings these stops together; a tour map and accompanying booklet have also been published. Guided tours of the buildings and fountains can be booked through the Hochdorf municipal administration. The tour is accessible via the S9.

The Hochdorf Local History Museum is located in the basement of the Avanti school building. Its stories and exhibits from the Hochdorf region span the 19th century to the present day. Topics include the town’s development and local stories, as well as industry, business, crafts and families. The museum complements the walking tour with insights into local history and different aspects of life in the area.

The churches also tell the story of Hochdorf’s past. A place of worship stood on the site of today’s church square from an early date. A church mentioned in an indulgence letter from 962 was probably dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours; it is thought to have been consecrated as a church of Saints Peter and Paul. The Reformed church on Luzernstrasse was built in the Heimatstil style and occupied in 1929. Its circular window in the choir, created by Giuseppe Scartezzini, depicts the calming of the storm on the lake and is now on the west wall. Romano Galizia designed the interior and created the windows, wall tapestry, communion table and lectern.

Culture and excursions in the Seetal

The Braui cultural centre offers a varied programme of comedy, classical music, pop, small-scale cultural events, folk music and theatre. If you’d like to plan your stay around a particular cultural event, check the programme for your travel dates. At events at the Seetal distillery, visitors can learn about how spirits and liqueurs are made.

The wider Seetal area has walking and hiking routes, some of which offer views of the Alpine range. The Hochdorf–Lake Baldegg–Hitzkirch route follows the lakeshore and offers a detour to Heidegg Castle near Gelfingen. Another hike starts at Hochdorf station and goes via Hohenrain to Lieli. The Hochdorf–Hohenrain–Lieli–Gelfingen route includes a detour to the Kommende in Hohenrain and recommends visiting the ruins of Nünegg in Lieli. Access through the castle gate may vary.
