Römerswil lies on the gentle southern slope of the Erlosen, which is also home to Hildisrieden and Rain. The village’s cultural landscape is shaped by its Neo-Romanesque parish church and the Lourdes Grotto below it; for outdoor activities, there is also a hiking route and a panorama cross-country ski trail that can be used when snow conditions are sufficient. Cycling routes in the Seetal offer further options. For planning, it is helpful to distinguish between them: the activities differ in season, length and type, so you can weigh up individual explorations of the village separately from longer tours.
Landscape at Lake Baldegg
Lake Baldegg is one of the largest nature reserves in the Canton of Lucerne; around 50 percent of its long shoreline is open to the public for active leisure and recreation. Fishing is also permitted at the lake. This brings together the character of a protected area, recreation and a specific activity for which you should check the local rules in advance.
Cycling tours in different formats
The family route on the Seetal cycling map goes around Lake Baldegg. The map includes three routes in total, with different levels of difficulty; as map information may be revised, it is advisable to check the current route before setting off. The Heart Route is a fully signposted Swiss cycle touring route for e-bikes. The Heart Loop Seetal offers a different format: its 117 kilometres are divided into two day stages away from traffic. Its 51-kilometre eastern leg runs over the Lindenberg and offers views of Lake Baldegg, Lake Hallwil and the Alpine panorama. Different features therefore come into play when choosing: the lake route’s designation as a family route, the Heart Route’s focus on e-bikes, and the length and stages of the Heart Loop.
Hiking and cross-country skiing
The Hitzkirch–Herlisberg–Römerswil–Hochdorf hike is 14.59 kilometres long and rated easy. After Herlisberg, it leads through the forest to Römerswil. When snow conditions are sufficient, the panorama cross-country ski trail between Herlisberg and Römerswil is suitable for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. From Römerswil, the trailhead is a ten-minute walk from the car park. Access information can change seasonally, and use of the trail requires sufficient snow; therefore, check the current snow conditions and access information before travelling. The two activities require different checks: for the hike, the route details matter, while for the trail, snow conditions are an additional factor.
Church and Lourdes Grotto
Römerswil’s current parish church was built in the Neo-Romanesque style and consecrated in 1882. Inside, it has a coffered and painted wooden ceiling with a central image of the Ascension of Christ. The Lourdes Grotto lies below the church and can be reached by a staircase. It has been a place of silent prayer since 1932.
Ober-Rinach Ruins
The Ober-Rinach ruins lie on a ridge west of Lake Baldegg. The surviving remains include walls of the outer enclosure, the main tower, the residential wing and some outbuildings. There is a small free car park for visitors to the castle; from there, a signposted 400-metre path leads to the ruins. As access information can change, check it before your visit.
