Waltensburg is a typical street village on a spacious terrace between Flém and the Rhine, about 300 metres above the valley floor. Alongside the German name Waltensburg, Vuorz is the Romansh name; Uors la Foppa is also known as a name for the village. The church, museum and medieval castle sites give the village’s history a distinct character. There are also two different routes to the ruins of Munt Sogn Gieri and a mountain ride on the chairlift.

Church, Frescoes and Museum

The Church of Saint Desiderius and Saint Leodegar was built in the 11th century and first mentioned in 1241. Its Gothic frescoes were created around 1350 by the painter known as the Waltensburg Master. You can visit them independently every day from 09:00 to 20:00; check the visiting conditions before your trip.

Opposite the church, in Casa Cadruvi, is the Waltensburg Master Museum. Its permanent exhibition offers insight into the painter’s work, significance and context. A folklore exhibition also focuses on the everyday life of earlier generations. Art history and everyday history thus offer two distinct perspectives, without requiring you to confuse the frescoes with the exhibition content.

Medieval Sites and Their Access Routes

Kropfenstein cave castle, also known as Casti Grotta, is a three-storey structure from the 13th century, perched on the edge of a sheer cliff. Visitors reach it by a steep path down and enter the castle through a low gate. The eastern approach follows a narrow rock ledge around a corner; the path has been widened and secured with railings. Check local access conditions before your visit.

Jörgenberg is considered the most impressive and oldest medieval castle complex in the Surselva. The walled area measures about 100 × 70 metres, excluding the moat. On the return route, a detour leads to two stone pillars from a former gallows, about 600 metres southwest of the castle ruins.

A guided tour of Jörgenberg and Gallows Hill starts at the Vuorz Cadruvi postbus stop. It covers the historic Waltensburg judicial district and the witch trials. Groups can book guided tours of Waltensburg for individually agreed dates. Meeting-point and booking arrangements may change; confirm them in advance.

Hike, Snowshoe Route and Mountain Ride

The hike to the ruins of Munt Sogn Gieri starts in the village centre. It is 3.6 kilometres long and takes one hour; weather and trail conditions can affect the hiking time. The snowshoe hike to the same destination starts elsewhere: in Waltensburg Demvitg, following forest and forestry roads. This winter route depends on snow and weather conditions. When planning, the main differences between the two options are therefore the season and starting point.

Another option is the Waltensburg/Curtginet four-seat chairlift. It takes visitors in 20 minutes from 1,102 metres above sea level to the mountain station at Alp Dado, at 1,859 metres. In winter, pedestrians, skiers and snowboarders are welcome on the chairlift. As seasonal operations are subject to changing conditions, check operating information before your ride.
