A hilltop castle, museums offering very different perspectives, and trails focused on nature and culture define Lenzburg. This makes the city an interesting destination for stays where you want to discover history beyond exhibition rooms. Between the castle, local history, contemporary art and routes along the Aabach, you can choose what to focus on based on your own interests.
Castle History and Local History
Lenzburg Castle is one of the oldest hilltop castles in Switzerland. The museum in the castle spans 1,000 years of castle history: its exhibitions take visitors from the Late Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque periods to the 20th century. If you are interested in the castle’s development, you can encounter several historical periods within one building.
The Burghalde Museum offers a different perspective on time. It presents selected objects from 15,000 years of cultural history. A tour of the exhibition and the historic rooms also conveys the history of Lenzburg, from a Roman village to a modern city. This means Lenzburg offers two distinct approaches side by side: a long cultural history told through selected objects and the city’s evolution through its own historical milestones.
Experience Industrial History Along a Route
The IndustriekulTour Aabach brings the industrial history of the canton of Aargau to authentic locations. This smartphone tour covers two kilometres, following the Aabach from the present-day Müllerhaus via Hünerwadelplatz and the town hall to Lenzburg’s town church. These stops give the route a specific course through the city; its subject sets it apart from a museum visit, where objects or exhibitions take centre stage.
Trails with Views of Nature and Culture
Local trails include the Discovery Trail, the Garden Trail, the Nature and Culture Trail, and others. The Erlebnis Lenzburg Discovery Trail highlights the castle and Goffersberg for their natural and cultural features. Its stops are marked on a map but are not signposted on site. If you choose this trail, the map is therefore an important part of finding your way.
The Nordic Walking Trail offers two well-signposted routes. The experiences described include nature along the Aabach, shady woodland, views of the castle and the panorama from Gofi. This gives the trail a different focus from the Discovery Trail: the former centres on two marked routes and views, while the latter features stops devoted to natural and cultural themes.
Old Town and Events
The old town invites you to stroll among cafés and shops; the impressive castle and picturesque parks also shape the character of Lenzburg. Festivals and markets take place regularly. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the relevant dates before making your plans.
