Narrow passageways and lanes wind between the houses on Gullholmen and lead down to the water. As one of Bohuslän’s most densely built-up coastal communities, the character of the place is evident in its buildings. Museums dedicated to family history, sailmaking, art and nature add to the picture. At the same time, several paths and roads lead from Gullholmen to Härmanö. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether you want to focus your stay more on Gullholmen’s cultural history or also take in the landscape and trails on Härmanö. The two ferry piers on Gullholmen are also worth including in your specific travel plans.

Local History in Houses and Collections

Stenstugan was built in 1832 and is one of the oldest houses on Gullholmen. Today, it is a museum displaying old household items and furniture. At Skepparhuset, visitors can learn about the history of a family who lived there during Gullholmen’s heyday; an intact sailmaking workshop is also on display. It includes sails from Alberts own cutters, Xantho and Harold. The two sites offer different points of focus: Stenstugan takes you through household objects and furnishings, while Skepparhuset brings together family history and sailmaking. If you choose cultural attractions based on their contents, household objects and maritime craftsmanship are clearly distinct themes.

Art and Church Architecture

The Gullholmen Art Museum displays works by around 70 artists. The subjects have a special connection to Gullholmen, and the museum aims to give future generations insight into the artistic life on Gullholmen over a period of 100 years through a selected collection of paintings. The connection to the place is evident both in the subjects and in the focus on artistic life over this period.

Gullholmen Church was completed in autumn 1799 in a sheltered valley on Lilla Hermanö. An altarpiece was installed in 1828, probably by a Dutch artist. The accounts distinguish between two milestones: the completion of the church and the later addition of the altarpiece. In Government Bill 1985/86:110, Gullholmen was designated as being of national interest from a cultural-historical perspective.

Härmanö: Landscape and Trails

On Härmanö, the focus shifts from densely built-up Gullholmen to a nature reserve with rocky cliffs, heathland, deciduous vegetation, meadows and pastures. Several paths and roads lead from Gullholmen to Härmanö. On the island, a trail leads to Skållehus, where settlement remains from the 16th century have been preserved. Some of the marked trails on Härmanö have been adapted for wheelchair users. This gives you several options to consider when planning: the landscape, selected adapted trails, or the settlement remains at Skållehus.

Another natural history attraction is the Gullholmen Nature and Bird Museum. It displays 150 birds, more than ten mammals and several marine organisms. The museum complements the landscape and trail options on Härmanö with a collection-based perspective. When exploring nature, you can distinguish between the habitats in the reserve and the animals and marine organisms on display at the museum.

Include Ferry Piers in Your Plans

The ferry between Tuvesvik and Käringön stops year-round at the Gullholmen Hamnen and Gullholmen Piren piers. Check the timetable before you travel and include the pier relevant to your arrival or departure in your accommodation plans. This way, you can take a practical travel detail into account alongside the museums and trails.
