A trail crossing Orust from coast to coast offers a special way to discover the island: Orust Tvärs is 40 kilometres long and designed as a nature and cultural trail. Along the route, 64 cultural and natural landmarks are signposted. This way, you can encounter both landscapes and traces of history along the way.

Hiking between forests, traces of settlement and the sea

The Kultehamn walking trail passes 14 ruins and buildings over four kilometres. Information boards explain the history of the Torp settlements and life there 100 years ago. The trail also has a distinctive practical feature: a rock crevice was drained and the path improved to make it easier to walk and passable for an electric wheelchair. There are three wheelchair-accessible rest areas along the route. Check the conditions of this infrastructure before your visit.

The Sven-Altare walking trail combines a different distance with a protected forest. The route is six kilometres long; almost all of it runs through the Morlanda säteri forest, which is protected as a nature reserve. A signposted car park is located west of the Morlanda brygga jetty. The Björnsundskanalen trail is just under two kilometres long and runs mostly through the Morlanda Nature Reserve. A long, narrow stone causeway leads you to Great Björnholmen. Trail and parking conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check for updates before setting out.

The Husebyleden is 3.5 kilometres long. With a break for coffee you have brought along, the hike takes about two hours; some sections have steep inclines. The trail passes the hillfort at Huseby, which offers a wide-ranging view of the sea.

The Orust Pilgrim Trail offers another way to discover the island on foot. It runs along paths, hilly terrain and small roads between eight churches. You can walk the trail independently at any time. A pilgrim map shows the route, as well as rest areas, toilets and overnight accommodation, helping you plan your own stages.

Ancient traces and coastal history

Kultehamn is associated with more than just its walking trail: it was designated a cultural heritage site in 1987 and is protected under Sweden’s Cultural Heritage Act. Orust’s megalithic tombs take us even further back in time. The island has the largest concentration of such tombs in Bohuslän, particularly in the parishes of Tegneby and Stala. They were built just over 5,000 years ago, within a period of a few centuries.

The Hoga archaeological area includes stone circles from the Early Iron Age, an Iron Age burial ground with burial mounds and stone settings, and a runestone from the Viking Age. These varied remains bring home the chronological span of archaeological finds on Orust, without suggesting that all the traces belong to the same period.

The area’s fishing past is also still visible in its streetscape: boathouses, narrow lanes and characteristic archipelago houses shape its built character. The Hälleviksstrand Museum preserves a 19th-century fisherman’s cottage with its original furnishings and fittings. The collection also includes a boathouse with various fishing implements. Check access arrangements before your visit. The Tegneby Hembygdsmuseum exhibition includes a furnished farmhouse with a barn, a parish granary, and old household items and agricultural tools.

Protected areas, local produce and getting here

Fjords and narrow sounds separate Orust from mainland Sweden to the east and from the island of Tjörn to the south. Härmanö is one of the larger nature reserves in Bohuslän, has a diverse range of habitats and is considered particularly suitable for birdwatching. The protected areas and trails therefore reveal different sides of the landscape, from forested routes to habitats of interest for birdwatching.

Farm shops on Orust offer local produce such as honey, vegetables, strawberries, ice cream, meat and eggs. Products and opening hours vary by producer. Café Tillsammans in Slussen serves a fully plant-based menu, homemade pastries from its own bakery and local products from Orust and Bohuslän. As opening hours vary by season, check visiting options in advance.

Orust can be reached by car from the mainland via two bridges; travelling by boat is also possible. Check transport arrangements before your trip. The Orust Tourist Information Centre is located in Kulturhuset Kajutan in central Henån and offers brochures, maps and inspiration for Orust, Bohuslän and Västsverige. Check seasonal service details in advance.
