Jonsered showcases industrial history in various forms: preserved factory buildings, an open-air museum about production, and a power station that still generates electricity. Alongside these are garden culture, church architecture and trails through nature. You can choose different focuses for your stay—from the history of the factories to hikes in nearby Bokedalen.

Factory History on Site

Jonsereds Fabriker began operations in 1835; many of its old factory buildings are still standing. Jonsereds brukssamhälle is one of Sweden’s best-preserved industrial complexes from the second half of the 19th century. Information boards and QR codes at Jonsereds Fabriker explain what work was carried out in the different parts of the factory. The Jonsereds Industrial History Museum on Fabriksholmen adds to this picture: as an open-air museum, it shows what was produced in the buildings and what work looked like in the different parts of the factory around 1900.

Jonsered Power Station is also part of the area’s industrial history. The granite structure is designated as a listed building and still generates electricity. Jonsereds Herrgård, in turn, dates back to a medieval Crown estate and was the residence of the factory’s founder, William Gibson. These places shed light on different chapters: industrial work and energy, as well as the history of the manor house.

Gardens and Church Architecture

Jonsereds Trädgårdar is a free interpretation of the former estate garden at Jonsereds Herrgård. The garden has a biodiversity trail with beehives, insect hotels and a pond. Piles of leaves and brushwood provide habitat structures. The garden thus connects the history of the former estate garden with concrete features that support biodiversity.

Jonsered Church is built of white-rendered brick in an English-inspired Neo-Gothic style. Its architectural features include a slender tower and a narrow, three-sided chancel. The organ is also remarkable: the Schiörlin organ is the smallest and second-oldest surviving Schiörlin organ in Sweden, and its case is in its original condition. The architecture and the history of the organ offer a distinct cultural focus alongside the area’s industrial history.

Hiking Trails and Nature Areas

The fifth section of the Bohusleden trail runs through Jonsereds Fabriker and passes Jonsereds Trädgårdar. The Gotaleden runs between Gothenburg and Vårgårda via Jonsered and offers varied hikes through a large expanse of countryside. Trail conditions can change, so check current conditions before setting out.

The Bokedalen Nature Reserve lies just north of Jonsered. Its landscapes include beech and oak forests, old pine forest, meadows, avenues and parkland. The nearby Bokedalen nature trail is four kilometres long and takes about an hour to walk. Numbered beech-leaf markers indicate the route; the walking time should be taken as an approximate guide.

Jonsereds strömmar also offers a connection with nature: the area is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas and is home to salmon, white-throated dippers, kingfishers and grey wagtails. Bokedalen’s forests and meadows, as well as the wildlife along the streams, offer different insights into the nature around Jonsered.

Brewery Tour and Getting There

Poppels Brewery offers guided brewery tours in Jonsered. The tour shows visitors the fermentation tanks, brewhouse and sacks of malt, and explains the steps in the brewing process. After the tour, guests enjoy a beer tasting in the restaurant. Dates and availability may change; check the latest information in advance.

At Poppels Öl&Mat, the menu, described as “brew-food”, features carefully selected dishes paired with the beers. The menu may change. To get to Jonsereds Trädgårdar, take the commuter train between Gothenburg and Alingsås to Jonsered station; the gardens are a short walk from there. Check the current timetable before travelling.
