The Undenäsleden, the disc golf course and Undenäs Church offer different things to do in Undenäs: a marked hike, a recreational activity and church history. The trail offers views of Lake Viken, which is used by vessels on the Göta Canal. This brings landscape, exercise and culture together as separate interests.

Hiking the Undenäsleden

The Undenäsleden is 16 km long, marked in blue and can be walked in either direction. The distance provides a concrete basis for planning your day, while the option of walking it either way leaves the choice of direction open. Along the way, the trail offers views of Lake Viken, which is used by vessels on the Göta Canal. At 16 kilometres, the hike makes for a full activity in its own right; views of canal traffic add a distinctive landscape feature to the route details.

There is a large car park at the trailhead, with access from Svanhultsvägen and Stråhlevägen. Route 420 connects Karlsborg, Forsvik, Undenäs and Sätra bruk; the “Stråhlevägen” stop is on Svanhultsvägen. If you are driving, the car park provides a clear starting point for your hike; bus travellers can factor the route and stop into their plans. Check the timetables in advance.

Disc golf as an alternative

The Undenäs disc golf course is in the Unneboområdet area and has five baskets. Play is free, and discs can also be borrowed free of charge from Ica Lanthandel Undenäs. If you are not bringing your own discs, you can plan to borrow some; if borrowing discs is essential to your visit, check availability for your chosen day in advance.

Trail or course?

The two activities differ in the kind of information used to describe them: the Undenäsleden is a 16 km trail, while the disc golf course has five baskets. You can base your choice on whether you are looking for a hiking route or a recreational activity; the numbers describe different things and should not be treated as equivalent measures.

Undenäs Church and its history

Undenäs Church is often called “Tiveden’s cathedral.” It was consecrated on 22 April 1894; the earlier wooden church burned down in an arson attack in 1890. Four years separate the fire from the consecration: the 1890 date refers to the earlier wooden church, not to the consecration of the church mentioned here. The small church museum at Undenäs Church displays objects from the 1948 excavation of the site of the old church. The collection adds archaeological finds to the church’s history. If you would like to visit the museum, check visitor arrangements in advance.

Another hiking option

The Västra Vätterleden passes Undenäs hembygdsgård. If you are choosing between the two trails, they offer different points of interest: the Undenäsleden is 16 km long and has views of Lake Viken, while the Västra Vätterleden passes the hembygdsgård. Conditions and trail markings on the Västra Vätterleden may change. If you plan to hike it, check the current route description and signage before setting out.
