Vanäs Udde, also known as the Vanäs Peninsula, lies in Lake Vättern; Karlsborg Fortress is located there. Built between 1819 and 1909, it was the largest fortress in Europe. The area’s history comes to life in the museum, on guided tours and along trails with historic stops.
The fortress as a place of history
The Karlsborg Fortress Museum is located on both sides of the impressive church vault in the 678-metre-long main rampart. It covers more than 2,200 m² with exhibitions, stories and objects. Here, you can encounter the history of the fortress within a striking part of the structure.
Historical adventure tours, town tours and tours of the ramparts are offered at the fortress; availability and booking may vary by season. The fortress is open to visitors around the clock. Please observe any restrictions posted on site. Mission Rooms offers a different kind of historical experience for groups: it combines suspense, problem-solving and military precision. The challenges are based on real events and people.
By the Göta Canal: Waterway and industrial history
The Göta Canal runs through the landscape between Lake Vänern and the Baltic Sea, via Lake Vättern; canal boats pass through Karlsborg seasonally. At Rödesundsbron, the bridge is opened for Göta Canal traffic and also for Carlsborgs Segelsällskap. Opening procedures and seasonal schedules may change. If you plan your visit around the bridge openings, check the latest schedule.
The short Kanalholmen Runt trail loops around Kanalholmen alongside the Göta Canal. Signs mark places of historical interest; the starting point is Kindboms Magasin, a building dating from the 18th century. Forsviks Bruk, a living industrial museum, is also located near Karlsborg. There, visitors can see work taking place in the shipyard, forge and mill.
Forsviks sluss lock is also located near Karlsborg. Built in 1813, it has a drop of 3.5 metres. This makes it the oldest and highest single-chamber lock on the Göta Canal. The views of the canal, bridge and lock reveal different aspects of the waterway: seasonal boat traffic as well as its technical and industrial history.
Hiking trails and experiences on the water
The trails offer different experiences, too. A trail on Vanäs Udde passes historic buildings; the Ranger Trail on Vaberget is a challenging circular route with ascents and descents. The approximately 175-kilometre Västra Vätterleden connects Bergslagsleden with Småland, passes the Göta Canal and runs through forests parallel to the shores of Lake Vättern. Check the Västra Vätterleden route details and the condition of the Ranger Trail before setting out.
There are 26 hiking trails in Karlsborg Municipality. The municipality also provides maps for hiking, cycling, horse-riding and paddling routes. Several rental providers and suitable launch sites are listed for canoe and kayak trips; check availability and water conditions in advance.
The floating sauna in Karlsborgsviken offers views across Lake Vättern and direct access to swimming in the lake beside the historic fortress walls. Check booking and operating information in advance. The municipality also has fishing waters in Lake Vättern, Bottensjön and Tiveden. Before setting out, check the applicable fishing permits, rules and seasonal restrictions.
