Discover Forsvik through the Göta Canal and the long industrial history of Forsviks bruk. The lock reveals the technical side of the town; preserved industrial buildings and their present-day uses lead on to theatre, music and museum activities. There are also opportunities to get outdoors or explore the cultural offerings.

The lock and canal construction in Forsvik

Forsvik’s lock was built in 1813. With a drop of 3.5 metres, it is the oldest and highest single-chamber lock on the Göta Canal. During its construction, a 500-metre-long canal was also blasted through the rock between Dammsjön and Bottensjön. It still connects Lake Viken with Lake Vättern today. These details make the canal’s construction tangible through specific structures and waterways. Sweden’s first iron bridge is also located in Forsvik.

Industrial history still in use

Forsviks bruk represents 600 years of industrial history. The site is designated both a historic building and an area of national interest. Two preserved buildings illustrate different aspects of this heritage: Träsliperiet is the only surviving building of its kind in Sweden. Gjuteriet, which has also been preserved, now serves as a venue for theatre and musicals. Industrial history here includes not only former production buildings, but also their present-day cultural use.

At the mill, dating from 1802, the miller grinds flour once a week during the high season. The museum shop is located by the museum reception in Träsliperiet. Its products include flour from the site’s own mill, handicrafts and interesting books. The mill and shop offer different insights into the work and products of the site.

The forge is also part of the visitor experience at Forsviks bruk: on summer Saturdays, visitors can watch blacksmithing there. Teater Bryggan is an open-air theatre stage in this distinctive industrial setting and hosts a range of cultural events. The two offerings have different focuses: craft work in the forge and cultural events outdoors.

Activities around water and culture

The Forsvik MåBra-rundan is a 2-kilometre exercise trail with activities along the Göta Canal and partly beside the shore of Lake Viken. It complements the exploration of the canal and industrial history with an active outdoor route. At Hegarts Canoe, you can build your own wooden canoe together with Josef Hegart. Hegarts Canoe also offers guided tours in Forsvik in traditional wooden canoes hand-built by Josef Hegart.

For a break, Forsviks Bruk has a picnic area with a lovely view across Lake Viken. Forsviks Café & Mat, with garden seating, is right next to the lock. Visitors can choose between a place for a picnic and a café.

Forsviks Bruk is also a certified InfoPoint in the Forsvik area. Knowledgeable staff can answer simple questions about places to visit nearby and provide brochures and maps. This can be helpful when finding your way to other destinations.
