In Habo, the landscape ranges from a dramatic bedrock plateau and lush beech forests to seemingly barren, mountain-like areas. With 23 nature reserves, nature is a defining feature of the municipality. Trails, protected areas and seasonal wildlife sightings reveal different sides of the landscape—from short circular walks to vast marshlands.

Marshes, forests and trails

In the Domneån Nature Reserve, a circular trail just over 1.5 kilometres long passes rest stops and viewpoints. At times, you can spot beavers there; with a little luck, you may see grazing moose. Grey wagtails nest by the water, and occasionally you can see dippers diving for insects. The circular trail combines scenic views with the chance to look out for wildlife by the water.

Trail lengths and accessibility details also vary considerably: Dumme mosse has ten kilometres of boardwalks, five kilometres of which have been adapted for wheelchair users. In Fiskebäck Nature Reserve, the circular trail is about one kilometre long; the first 200 metres have been adapted for wheelchair users. In Baremosse, meanwhile, marshland defines the landscape: the nature reserve covers almost 400 hectares, consists mostly of marsh, and is a breeding ground for several bird species. In April and May, with a little luck, you can watch black grouse perform their courtship flight there.

Pilgrimage routes and trails through Habo

Several walking trails offer different perspectives on the municipality. Stages 7 and 8 of the Västra Vätterleden pass through Habo, from First Camp Hökensås via Fagerhult to Mullsjö. The Norra S:t Sigfridsleden also passes through the municipality and is part of an extensive European network of pilgrimage routes. The Högamoleden runs through Domsand and the Domneån Nature Reserve. These routes differ in more than just their names: they pass through different parts of Habo and offer a practical way to explore the landscape on foot.

Swimming spots with their own features

On Lake Vättern, Domsandsbadet has a long sandy beach and two bathing jetties. Facilities include changing rooms, toilets and a kiosk; a small marina is next door. Furusjöbadet offers something different: this family-friendly lake has shallow water, bathing jetties and a large playground. A ramp provides wheelchair users with access to the water. At Baskarpsbadet, you’ll find a long sandy beach and clear water. The specific features at each swimming spot can help you choose between them, rather than treating all locations as alike.

Churches and local heritage

Habo’s architectural and local history is also part of its character. Habo Church is an unusually ornate rural church with a richly painted interior. Brandstorp Church preserves one of the very few wooden cemetery enclosures still standing in the country. A wooden church is believed to have been built at Fiskebäck Chapel as early as the 12th century. These descriptions highlight different aspects of the heritage: a remarkable interior, a rare surviving architectural feature, and a possible early wooden church.

Habo Local Heritage Centre is set in a scenic park and has eight buildings of local historical interest. They were moved there from different parts of the municipality. The buildings therefore tell the story not only of different architectural styles, but also of the places they came from within Habo. For a visit that brings together nature, culture and local history, the churches and heritage centre add a distinct historical perspective to the landscapes and trails.

Winter and other activities

At the Gränsenstugan outdoor recreation area, there is a floodlit three-kilometre cross-country ski trail, which is groomed when there is enough snow. Parking is next to the cabin and the trailhead; there is also an outdoor gym and a barbecue area. The facilities combine a specific winter route with other amenities in the same location, while grooming the trail depends on sufficient snowfall.

From April to September, Habo Discgolf welcomes everyone, including non-members, to its weekly round of golf. At Kyrkekvarn, you can ride Icelandic horses. Together with the walking trails, swimming spots and historic sites, these activities show how varied a stay in Habo can be—depending on whether you’re interested in nature, exercise, culture or a mix of all three.
