Njurunda Church Ruin lies in the centre of Njurundabommen and is considered the most distinctive trace of the area's historical continuity. Njurundabommen has long been a parish centre. Architecture, former transport routes and the mouth of the StĂĄngĂĄn provide different historical and geographical points of reference. For planning your trip, these themes can be distinguished from the Strandleden walking and cycling route.

Churches and Architectural History

Njurunda Church is located about one kilometre south of Njurundabommen. J. F. Ă…bom built it from stone in 1862. Its three-aisled floor plan divides the church interior into three aisles; the central section is raised, and the choir ends in an apse. These details describe both the layout of the floor plan and the termination of the choir.

Across the E4 from Njurunda Church Ruin stands the former bank building of Sundsvalls Enskilda Bank, later Sundsvallsbanken and Nordbanken. It was built in the 1920s in the National Romantic style. The two buildings can be classified by different characteristics: Njurunda Church is notable for its year of construction, stone and floor plan, while the bank building is notable for its location, former banking history and architectural style.

Parish Centre and Historic Routes

In the 17th and 18th centuries, a historic country road ran through Njurundabommen, past the church and across the Ljungan. At the ferry crossing, people were rowed across the river. Along with its long-standing role as a parish centre, this gives the area a character in which church history and former transport routes describe different functions: one point of reference concerns the area's ecclesiastical role, while the other concerns the route through the area and the river crossing.

The country road is a point of historical reference. It is therefore different from a walking and cycling connection, which offers another kind of orientation for planning a trip today. When exploring the area's history, it is also worth considering the buildings and the former transport route as separate topics rather than combining them into a single route.

Rivers and Routes

The Stångån is a tributary of the Ljungan in Västernorrland County and flows into the Ljungan at Njurundabommen. The historic ferry crossing was across the Ljungan. This makes it possible to distinguish the mouth of the Stångån from the former crossing of the Ljungan as two separate geographical points of reference.

The Strandleden is a walking and cycling route between Kvissleby and Njurundabommen. This brings two different types of route into focus: a historic country road with a river crossing and a walking and cycling connection between the two named places. If you want to include both cultural history and a route in your trip planning, you can consider these topics separately without treating them as the same route.

Plan Your Arrival

Njurunda travel centre offers good connections between trains, buses, taxis, cars, bicycles and mopeds. Construction work is taking place there. Before travelling, check the latest information about the travel centre and plan your specific journey accordingly. The connections offer a distinct point of reference for planning your arrival, while the churches, river connections and historic country road help you organise the themes of your stay. This keeps modern travel planning and local history distinct while allowing them to complement each other as you choose what interests you about the trip.
