Edsele lies in western Ångermanland on the Faxälven. Here, architectural and art history sit alongside a summit route and shorter running and training trails. For planning your trip, it helps to consider these separately: Edsele kyrka brings together different historical periods; the Bybergsleden features a summit on Byberget and a partly steep ascent. If you choose a measured training trail, you’ll find a lit route of 2.5 kilometres and another route of five kilometres. Viewpoints with expansive vistas add another perspective on the landscape.

Architectural and art history at Edsele kyrka

Edsele kyrka was built in 1799 by Pål Persson from Stugun, a church builder from Jämtland. Its pulpit is older: Jon Snickare made it in Härnösand in the late 17th century. The building and its furnishings therefore lead back to different periods and craftspeople from different places. The church’s history can thus be traced through specific names, dates and places of origin, not just its year of construction.

The furnishings also include a fragmentary figure of Christ from the 12th century. It probably belonged to a processional cross or a triumphal crucifix; its attribution therefore remains uncertain. The figure has survived as a fragment, and its original function has not been definitively established either. Together with the pulpit from the late 17th century, it adds a much older time horizon to the more recent church building. Those interested in historic art will find both firmly established dates and an attribution explicitly described as probable.

The Edsele local history museum offers a different focus. It consists of a parstuga dating from 1836, relocated from Fjällbohög. The house’s history therefore includes both its year of construction and its relocation and former place of origin. The church and museum offer different architectural points of connection to local history, though they were not built in the same period.

Compare trails and ascents

Edsele has a lit running and training trail of 2.5 kilometres, as well as another route of 5 kilometres. The longer route is twice the length of the lit option. There is also a wind shelter and barbecue area beyond the running and training trail. So alongside the measured routes, there are specific places to take a break.

The Bybergsleden leads to a summit on Byberget, 318 metres above sea level. The ascent is about 1.5 kilometres long and partly steep; ropes provide support in some places. Parking is available near the start. The kilometre figure refers to the ascent and describes something different from the lengths of the running and training trails. When comparing the options, the summit destination, gradient and ropes for support are also worth considering, alongside the distance.

Views and landscape

Edsele has viewpoints with far-reaching views across the landscape. Along with its location on the Faxälven, they provide a scenic setting for your stay, while the summit of Byberget offers a specific destination for the ascent. Västernorrland’s largest quartz and feldspar quarry lies northwest of Edsele. The landscape can also be understood through its geographical features: from the Faxälven and the viewpoints to this quarry to the northwest.

When choosing what to do, you can consider architectural and art history, trail length and landscape as distinct points of interest. The church and museum offer different perspectives on local history. For the trails, comparing them makes it clear whether you’d like to include a measured running and training route or a partly steep ascent to a summit in your plans.
