Ulvöhamn combines the history of a fishing community with notable highlights for your stay: the Ulvö Museum, Ulvö gamla kapell and trails through the coastal landscape. When planning, it helps to consider culture and outdoor activities as separate priorities. The area’s history spans from the 16th century to the present day; for hiking, you can choose between scenic Lotsberget and the approximately 25-kilometre-long Ulvöleden trail.

Fishing History at the Ulvö Museum

The main site of the Ulvö Museum traces the development of the fishing community of Ulvöhamn from the 16th century to the present day. The Sjöbodar also offer a specific historical reference point: in 1810, there were 35 of these boathouses in Ulvöhamn. The first Sjöbodar were built by farmers; by the 1850s, Ulvöhamn already had an established year-round settlement of professional fishermen.

The Ulvö Museum site includes a Kokhus, a Sjöbod and a Gistvall. This presents the community’s history not only as a chronological overview: the buildings and features on the site also give the subject a physical dimension. The information about the Sjöbodar and the settlement of professional fishermen marks different stages in Ulvöhamn’s history.

The Chapel and Pilot Museum

Ulvö gamla kapell was built in 1622. The well-preserved wall and ceiling paintings were signed by Roland Johansson Öberg in 1719. The architecture and paintings therefore belong to two different periods in the chapel’s history and can be considered separately.

The chapel can be booked for weddings, baptisms and funerals, either religious or civil. If you are planning a ceremony, arrange the booking in advance.

Lotsstugan houses a small pilot museum and is open to visitors at certain times during the summer. Check the current opening hours before visiting; opening is seasonal.

Lotsberget and Ulvöleden: Two Hiking Options

From Ulvöhamn, you can reach Lotsberget via the long Lotstrappan staircase or a path on the back of the mountain. From the summit, there are panoramic views over Ulvöhamn and the archipelago; visitors can also learn about the history of the pilots. The viewpoint therefore combines scenic views with a local history theme.

The Ulvöleden offers a different route option: the hiking trail around Ulvön is approximately 25 kilometres long and passes through coastal scenery with cliffs, forest sections, fishing huts and sea views. The route can be shortened or extended using other paths and roads. Check the latest route information before planning a specific hike.

For orientation, it is helpful to note the difference: Lotsberget focuses on the viewpoint and two access routes, while the Ulvöleden is a circular trail whose length can be adjusted. This lets you choose between a clearly defined destination and a hiking route where the planned distance can vary.

Getting to Ulvön

Ulvön can be reached by ferry from Docksta, Ullånger and Köpmanholmen. As none of the ferries carry cars, you cannot bring a car to Ulvön. Check ferry connections and timetables before travelling, as routes and schedules may change.
