Nyland lies where the Ångermanälven flows into a deep sea inlet. Its location and local history go hand in hand: during its heyday in the 19th and 20th centuries, Nyland was the most highly developed industrial community in Ådalen. Preserved buildings and distinctive features around the harbour offer various glimpses into this past.

Streetscape and Industrial History

Several typical light-coloured wooden houses from Ådalen’s sawmill and railway communities remain along Köpmangatan, Nyland’s former main street. The Hamnmagasinet at Nyland’s quay is a historic, white-painted building. Nyland’s former courthouse has also been preserved. These buildings represent different aspects of the town’s history, from its streetscape to former public buildings.

Accessibility at the Hamnmagasinet has been improved with new doors, stairs and secure escape routes. The island of Lilla Norge lies just outside the harbour. It was formed from ballast sand carried by Norwegian ships. Here, alongside the harbour’s built heritage, you can discover a distinctive feature of maritime history.

Ytterlännäs Gamla kyrka

The nearby Ytterlännäs Gamla kyrka is located between Bollstabruk and Nyland; signs to the access road are posted along Road 333. The stone church dates from the 13th century. Its vaults and wall paintings date from the 15th century, while its wooden interior fittings have remained completely intact since the 18th century. This makes the building a place where several distinct eras stand side by side.

The church offers guided tours, a café, exhibitions, a children’s art studio, and a church trail with a quiz walk. Check visiting options in advance if you plan to book a guided tour or any of these activities. This allows you to complement an interest in architecture and history with other visitor experiences.

Hiking Trails and Winter Options

Antons stig starts at the car park and is about 500 metres long. The detour along the path up Nylandsberget offers far-reaching views over Nyland and the Ångermanälven. The trail’s length and viewpoint provide two distinct points to consider when planning: the distance to cover and the destination on the hill.

For the Nyland hiking route, a car park is located above the ski slope at the cross-country skiing centre. If travelling to the hiking route by bus, get off at the Nylands Folkets hus stop on Storgatan. There are two cross-country ski trail lengths to choose from: 2.5 and 5 kilometres. They start at Nylandsberget and in the Slalombacken area, respectively. So, alongside the hiking trail, there is also a dedicated winter option with two different distances.
