Fränsta combines distinctive architectural history with paths along the Ljungan: Vikbron is a bridge made entirely of wood dating from the late 19th century, and Torps Church stands at a church site with a history reaching back to the 12th century. There is also a 4.5 km promenade loop, a bathing spot and an activity park. When planning your visit, take the bridge’s restoration closure and current transport connections into account.

Bridge Building and Church History

Vikbron is Sweden’s longest wooden bridge of its kind. It spans the Ljungan for 133 metres and was built entirely of wood in 1887–1888. Its length, material and construction dates give the structure a clear connection to the local history.

Torps Church is a white stone church in Fränsta on the Ljungan. The present church was built in 1782–1785; churches have stood at this site since the 12th century. It is important to distinguish the age of the site from the age of the present building. The church dates from the late 18th century, while Vikbron is from a later construction period in the late 19th century; the structures also differ in their materials and functions.

During restoration, Vikbron is closed to pedestrians. It is scheduled to reopen in summer 2027. If you are planning to walk across the bridge, take this planned date into account.

Walking Between the Village and the River

The 4.5 km Fränsta promenade loop leads from the centre of Fränsta towards the river. From the church, the route follows a pleasant path along the water. Its stated length makes it easy to plan as a walk in its own right; the route description connects the village with a stretch beside the water.

Fränsta lies on a south-facing slope with a lovely view over the Ljungan. The view across the river and the path by the water offer different perspectives on the same river. This lets you distinguish a walk along the water from a view of the Ljungan from within the village.

After the so-called Kärleksstigen, there are several rest areas with wind shelters. For hikers, these spots are an additional point of reference when planning time outdoors.

Bathing Spot and Leisure Activities

Viken bathing spot is a beach on the Ljungan. Facilities include bathing jetties, a changing cabin, a toilet, a wind shelter and a barbecue area. Facilities and conditions may change; check the site’s condition before your visit.

The activity park in Fränsta has a minigolf course and a playground. Alongside time by the water, it offers other specific leisure activities. Which ones suit your day depends on whether you want to include minigolf, the playground, a walk or the bathing spot.
