Where the Ljungan flows out of Kyrksjön, the river divides into three streams. Haverö strömmar shows just how rare free-flowing waters have become today: this habitat has high biological conservation value. It’s a striking place to begin exploring Ånge; hiking trails, viewpoints, and traces of earlier work on the water offer further perspectives.

River Landscapes and Trails

The Haverö strömmar nature reserve has trails and several rest areas. The northern rest area at Kvarnströmmen and the southernmost one at Strömnäset are also accessible with a stroller or walking aid. A restored fisherman’s cottage from the early 20th century adds an insight into the area’s history to the nature experience.

At Rankleven, protected status meets a distinctive climb: the mountain is designated as both a nature reserve and a Natura 2000 site. Two trails, each less than two kilometers long, lead to the top; the climb is steep and rocky. From the summit, the view stretches across the Ljungan Valley. You can take the bus to the Södra Sillre stop; from there, it’s 600 meters along the road to the start of the mountain trail. Check the current bus schedule before you travel.

A hiking trail leads up Gösundaberget, and the climb takes about 45 minutes. At the top, there’s a rest hut and a wind shelter. Another geological discovery is Snödskallegrottan: the cave formation is 57 meters long. Its fairly steep entrance leads via a staircase-like formation to Kerstins sal, from where several short side passages branch off.

Viewpoints and Special Destinations

Flataklocken combines expansive views with a special geographic distinction. In 1947, based on a calculation by KTH in Stockholm, the site was designated the geographic center of Sweden; the calculation determined the center of gravity of Sweden’s landmass. Flataklocken offers 360-degree views across Medelpad. An accessible gravel path leads up to the restaurant.

Nature and activity take a different form at Getberget: the top of the ski slope is 348 meters above sea level. The slope is 510 meters long, has a vertical drop of 140 meters, and is served by two lifts. Operations are seasonal. Boda Borg Torpshammar, by contrast, focuses on shared indoor challenges. Groups take on 22 unique quests with different themes and settings. Problem-solving and teamwork are part of the experience, as are different levels of physical activity; the stated number of quests may change over time.

Naturum Ånge offers an exhibition, as well as year-round activities and guided outings. Trails and viewpoints are also available independently of Naturum’s offerings; guided outings and exploring on your own offer different experiences.

Bridges and Stories Along the Ljungan

The Vikbron in Fränsta is Sweden’s longest wooden bridge of its kind, spanning the Ljungan for 133 meters. The trail on its north side is part of the S:t Olavsleden. The trail runs from Selånger in the east to Trondheim in the west, is about 580 kilometers long in total, and can also be explored in shorter stages. The Vikbron is currently being restored and cannot be crossed; it is expected to reopen in summer 2027. Check the latest status before your visit.

The history of log driving is also present along the Ljungan. The log-driving station at Eldnäset was established in the 19th century by Ljunga Elfs Flottningsbolag and used until 1968, when log driving on the Ljungan ended. The Eldnäsets Flottningsmuseum displays documents, old photographs, and log-driving equipment. Old films from Haverö and a slide presentation are also shown in the lecture hall.

Another collection is devoted to the former smallholder way of life. The Gösta Sundins slöjdmuseum in Västanå (Borgsjö) is run by his sons Ronny and Roger. It displays detailed models of the society of the time; the collection includes more than 300 groups containing over 10,000 objects. The Fiskehuset in Alby, by contrast, focuses on the former fishing industry: the building is located in Alderströmmen, was built in the 1870s, and was used until the mid-1960s to catch trout, salmon, grayling, and eels.

The buildings in Gammelbodarna are well preserved, giving the area high overall value. The land and buildings are privately owned; please bear this in mind when you visit.

Ånge’s tourist office is located at the Borgsjö rest area along the E14.
