Örträsk brings together architectural history, river culture and a range of waterside trails. Örträsk Church draws attention to neoclassical architecture, the granary to historic rural building, and the Örträsk dam to the era of log floating. Two practical questions also arise when planning your trip: Would you prefer a loop around Lake Örträsk or a route from the lake to the river mouth? And when it comes to fishing, are you more interested in a stretch of river or a clear-water lake? The options differ in route and type of water.

Church, granary and log-floating history

Örträsk Church is one of the best-preserved neoclassical churches in Upper Norrland. Its style places it within a classical architectural tradition and offers a clear focus for travellers interested in architectural history.

At the Örträsk local heritage centre, you can see a granary dating from 1680, considered one of the oldest buildings in South Lapland. It complements the church architecture with a different perspective on historic buildings: here, the focus is on an old agricultural building and rural construction.

The Örträsk dam is in the Öre River, just below its outflow from the lake. It is part of an area of national cultural heritage interest and is a notable reminder of the log-floating era. Log floating means transporting timber on water; at the Örträsk dam, the river’s location and its history of use come together.

When choosing what to see, different questions come to the fore: the church’s neoclassical design, the granary’s great age, or the connection between the river and log-floating history at the Örträsk dam.

Hiking trails and practical information

The newly established Örträsk Trail is a hiking route around Lake Örträsk. The Öre River Trail runs from Lake Örträsk to the mouth of the Öre River. The difference makes the choice clear: a loop around the lake or a route from the lake to the river mouth.

Along the Öre River Trail, there are overnight cabins, barbecue areas, wind shelters, dry toilets and beaches suitable for swimming. The Örträsk dam is clearly visible from the car park, and the path to it is about 200 metres long. In summer, the path to Gaffelberget is wide enough for wheelchairs and prams, but not as far as the rest area. If the rest area is important to your plans, take this limitation into account.

Lakes, river and fishing

Lake Örträsk is the largest lake in the Öre River. The Örträsk Fishing Conservation Area includes parts of the Vargån River; its fast-flowing sections have grayling and trout. Sandsjön is a large clear-water lake offering fishing for perch, pike, whitefish and trout. When comparing these fishing waters, river stretches are set against a lake; trout appears on both lists, while the other species mentioned differ. There is one species in common when choosing by fish type: trout. Grayling is listed for the Vargån, and perch, pike and whitefish for Sandsjön.
