Fell trails, a distinctive peak and Sámi culture offer different ways to experience Borgafjäll. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between a route that connects places, individual trail destinations and paths with a clearly described landscape. Cultural sites and architectural details are also part of what makes this destination distinctive.
Hiking trails with different points of interest
The Lapplandsleden is a 19 Swedish-mil-long ski and hiking route connecting Borgafjäll and Hemavan. One starting point is in Borgafjäll, where the southern boundary of the region of Lapland runs. Along the route, hikers and skiers cross Korpådalen in the Norra Borgafjällen Nature Reserve.
The Storfallet trail offers a different point of reference: It starts at the waterworks in Borgafjäll and ends at Storfallet. The Lillfjällsleden crosses the bare mountain, follows the shore of Borgasjön and passes through old-growth forest and mountain birch forest. A marked hiking trail to Borgahällan starts at Borgadammen. Trail conditions may vary by season; check them before planning your trip.
Borgahällan: cliff face and views
Borgahällan is on the south side of Borgasjön. At 1,149 metres, it is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Borgafjäll area; its almost vertical cliff face is 700 metres high. From Borgahällan, you can see the village of Borgafjäll and Klöverfjället. Its location, height and views make the mountain distinctive in different ways: it is both a prominent peak and a viewpoint overlooking the village and the fells.
Sámi history and architecture
Sutme Sameviste has been inhabited for at least 200 years and served as a summer and autumn residence for Sámi from Borgafjäll and Storjola. Storviken is an old Sámi summer camp where different types of buildings can be seen. The two examples have different points of focus: Sutme highlights its long history of use and seasonal function, while Storviken is notable for the buildings at the summer camp.
The Avasjö Chapel is part of Borgafjäll’s architecture. It was designed by Ralph Erskine, Sören Wimmerström and Ulf Oelrik. If you are coming from the direction of Dorotea, the chapel is on the right-hand side of the main road, a few hundred metres past Borgafjäll Hotell. This location description provides a specific reference point for arriving from that direction.
Art and other activities
Konstvägen Sju Älvar is a 35 Swedish-mil-long art exhibition that runs from Holmsund on the eastern coast to Borgafjäll in the southern Lapland fell region in the west. Route and artwork details may change; check them when planning your journey.
Many fishing waters around Borgafjäll can be reached via snowmobile trails. Observe restricted areas and check which trails are accessible and where restrictions apply before setting off. Mountain snorkelling is another activity in Borgafjäll: guided tours take you beneath the surface of a lake or river in Swedish Lapland. The operating season may vary; check before planning your trip.
