Near the centre of Sunne, Sundsbergs friluftsområde offers hiking and nature trails. This is where the Sundsbergsleden begins: it winds through a forest of large-trunked aspens and a herb-rich stream valley, passing Torp Skogsbacken. In winter, the area has illuminated cross-country ski trails and a toboggan run. This part of Sunne thus combines nature trails with a clear seasonal contrast.
Forests, water and varied landscapes
Sunne lies on Lake Fryken and is characterised by deep forests and open meadows. Nearby, Gettjärnsklätten rises as a hyperite mountain, with far-reaching views and interesting flora and insect life. The nature reserves also tell the story of the landscape and human use of the land: Kalvhöjden preserves an ancient, traditionally managed cultural landscape in Finnbygden, with a rich variety of plant life. Tiskaretjärn is also characterised by a traditional cultural landscape; living culture and traditional land management are part of the area's character.
By Lake Björken, a wetland rich in birdlife is paired with an observation tower, hiking trails, and picnic and barbecue areas. Another geological feature is Sånebyklätten, a gravel formation created by meltwater. A marked trail runs for about 400 plus 300 metres through the reserve. The varied landscapes range from forest and meadows to wetlands and gravel formations.
Cultural attractions and local highlights
Near Sunne, Mårbacka has been preserved as a memorial estate and is open to the public for guided tours. The grounds include a park, gardens, a historic setting, exhibitions and outdoor activities. Rottneros Park offers a different experience: a flower and sculpture park with themed gardens and around 100 sculptures and reliefs. At the park entrance, there is a café serving light meals, ice cream and fika.
In Sunne itself, culture and everyday life are close together: the open-air museum is on the outskirts of town and includes a school museum. Films are still shown at Teaterbiografen, one of Sweden's oldest cinemas with a continuing film programme. The Alma Löv Museum of Unexp Art is also one of Sunne's attractions. Nearby, the Ängenleden trail loops around Lake Ängsjön, offering experiences of nature and culture. Along the trail are the old arched stone bridge Putrale and sections of Kyrkvägen, dating from the Finnish settlement of the 17th century.
Activities through the seasons
At Sunne Ski & Bike, the slopes are used for family-friendly ski runs in winter and downhill mountain biking in summer. By Lake Fryken in the centre, Mejeriängen has a pump track, a children's playground and barbecue areas. Sunne Sommarland adds to the variety of leisure activities with almost 20 different attractions, including water slides and a Wipeout course on Lake Fryken.
Getting here and local cuisine
Sunne can be reached by train, bus or car. The Fryksdalsbanan takes travellers to Sunne by train and is considered one of Sweden's most scenic railway lines. At Nytorget in the centre, there is a 24-hour parking area for motorhomes.
The local food scene includes cafés by Lake Fryken, local bakeries and restaurants serving Värmland flavours and ingredients from the region. Nearby, the historic mill in Stöpafors produces skrädmjöl—a regional speciality that adds a culinary dimension to Sunne's landscape and cultural heritage.
