The ravines of Apertin were designated a natural monument in 1936, making them the first protected natural area in this part of the country. You can take a walk there among mature deciduous trees, hazel bushes and ferns.

Ravines, conservation history and views

Apertin Manor, together with the surrounding buildings, park and avenue, is protected as a listed building under the Cultural Heritage Act. The manor is privately occupied.

Kilsravinerna Nature Reserve lies south of National Road 61. In summer, lush vegetation and high humidity prevail, and several trails can be explored. The Skutbergsleden trail runs through the reserve: it stretches 24.3 kilometres between Sannerudsvallen in Kil and the Skutberget recreation centre on Lake Vänern, with 1.5 kilometres of the route passing through Kil Municipality.

The Frykenleden is a 19.5-kilometre hiking trail between Sannerudsvallen and Nilsby. It passes key habitats, archaeological monuments and cultural heritage sites. The trails differ in both length and the surroundings described: the Frykenleden is shorter and passes natural and cultural landmarks, while the Skutbergsleden runs through Kilsravinerna.

At Rennstadsnipan, a 3-kilometre circular trail leads to the summit and around the mountain. At the top there is an observation tower, a wind shelter and a fire pit. From the observation tower, you can see lakes, forests and mountains.

Cycling, swimming and wildlife watching

Frykstahöjden has an 18-hole disc golf course and a pump track open to cyclists of all kinds. An 8-kilometre mountain biking trail also starts at Frykstastugan and follows Ömansmilen in the opposite direction. Frykstahöjden offers three different activities: disc golf, pump track riding and mountain biking.

Fryksta has a bathing area at the southern end of Lake Fryken, with a simple playground and a toilet. Lövenstrand offers another explicitly seasonal nature experience: in summer, bulls, cows and calves of the Highland Cattle breed graze at Djurhägn/grillplats.

Railway history and historic trails

Kil is a railway junction with rail connections in five directions. Frykstad-Clara Elfs jernväg was Sweden’s first public railway, running between Lake Fryken in Kil and Lyckan in Forshaga. It operated from 1849 to 1871. The old carriage shed at the Frykstad Clara Elfs railway museum, at the southern end of Lake Fryken, houses carriages and other mementos of the railway. The museum is temporarily closed.

A pilgrimage trail has run along the eastern side of the Fryken lakes from Kil to Torsby since the 12th century.

Getting your bearings locally

The visitor service points run by Kil Municipality provide local information, maps and brochures about the area. Staff are also available to help visitors find their way around.
