Väse combines a town centre shaped by the railway with the natural and cultural landscapes around Panken and Väse Church. Panken is a shallow, nutrient-rich lowland lake surrounded by lakeside meadows. This gives you several themes to focus on when planning your trip: birdwatching by the water, the history of the railway settlement, and the older history of church architecture and settlement. Together, these offer different ways to explore the landscape and local history.

Panken and birdwatching

In spring, large flocks stop at Panken, including waders, whooper swans, teal and greylag geese. A hiking trail about 600 metres long leads southwest from Väse Church to a birdwatching tower. From there, you can observe the birdlife in the meadows along the shores of Panken. The tower stands in a beautiful pasture with old, gnarled pines. This makes both the seasonal stopover of birds and a specific observation point part of the nature experience.

April is the key month for another nature-watching experience: near Väse Church, large numbers of the rare asp can be seen spawning in the Glumman, which flows into Panken. The bird stopover takes place in spring, while the asp spawns in April.

Väse between the railway station and the parish

Väse is a railway settlement, and its historic built-up centre developed around the railway station. The station was inaugurated in 1869 and prompted the growth of the surrounding settlement. The routes of Storgatan and Arnövägen are also part of this history: for the most part, they still follow the routes laid out during the construction of the railway and the development of the settlement. The station and the street layout each offer different clues to the development of the town centre.

Väse Church offers an older historical perspective. The present church was built in 1760–1762 to designs by Johan Eberhard Carlberg; the west tower dates from 1794. The church is one of the largest stone churches in Värmland. The surviving church grounds include, among other buildings, a vicarage, a sexton’s house, a local heritage farm and church stables. The local heritage farm formerly served as a courthouse and inn.

Cultural landscape and centuries of land use

The cultural landscape around the church village of Väse Church is an old parish centre, with a settlement history that certainly dates back to the Iron Age. The area around Väse Church and Lake Panken is designated as an area of national interest for nature conservation and heritage conservation. Nature and cultural history thus meet in the same landscape, without being confined to a single period.

Land use also goes back a long way: the damp farmland along the shores of Lake Vänern and Panken Bay has been used for livestock raising and grazing since prehistoric times. This long agricultural history adds another perspective on the landscape to the seasonal nature-watching opportunities at the lake. There is also a runestone at Ve, known as Väsestenen or Rörstenen. It is one of the few known runestones in Värmland.
