Skattkärr lies directly on the shore of Lake Vänern, with views across the water. The development of the town can also be traced through an old railway connection, historic roads and the former brick and tile industry. This brings together several different themes for your stay: the waterside location, exercise on the motions/ski trail and local history. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can consider which of these aspects matters for planning your trip.
By Lake Vänern and along the trail
The Skattkärr exercise/ski trail includes an illuminated route of about 2.5 kilometres. It starts at Skogsvallen sports ground, passes under the E18 and continues into the forest area north of the road. In winter, Skattkärrs IF prepares cross-country ski tracks on the Skattkärr exercise/ski trail. This makes an illuminated trail and an explicitly winter-specific cross-country skiing option the main features here. The views across Lake Vänern offer a different focus: waterside views and exercise on the trail are distinct aspects of Skattkärr.
From former Björknäs to a railway town
Until the 1860s, the area now called Skattkärr was known as Björknäs. During those decades, Södra Skattkärrssågen, the town’s first industrial enterprise, was established. In 1869, the railway reached Skattkärr as part of the construction of the Nordvästra stambanan; this marked the beginning of its development as a railway town. This sequence links the earlier name with the beginnings of industry and the railway—important milestones in the town’s history.
In 1899, Olof Tjerneld had a brickworks built in what is now the town of Skattkärr. In 1902, the company opened a tile factory in Skattkärr, which mainly produced tiles for tiled stoves. Tegelparken was named after Skattkärr’s former brick and tile factory, which closed in 1959 after a fire.
Older road routes also offer insight into the town’s development. Skattkärrsvägen partly follows the former country road; Stationsvägen and Ivar Tjerneldsgatan are also recognisable older routes. Annelundsvägen now follows a straighter route, while Ängtorpsvägen is winding and gravelled. Houses dating from the early 20th century stand along the first three roads and near Bangårdsgatan, where the station house once stood. The railway connection, streets and houses thus add further aspects of the townscape to its industrial history.
