Molkom offers lakeside paths, hiking trails and traces of earlier work. When choosing where to stay, it helps to distinguish between your interests: the lakes are the focus for water activities, the trails vary in length and historical significance, and the townscape reflects agriculture, Molkom’s history as a bruksort (industrial village) and industrialization.
Lakeside paths and lakes
A lakeside promenade runs along the water at Molkomsjön and Borssjön. The lake landscape offers opportunities for swimming, fishing and ice skating. Graningebadet, a small bathing spot with a sandy beach and large grassy areas, is located on Molkomsjön. Molkom therefore combines water activities with a walk along the shore, with the bathing spot providing a specific place to visit by the lake.
Hiking trails by length and theme
Prostgårdsslingan is a four-kilometre circular trail that starts and ends in Molkom. Nearby, Acksjöleden comprises three circular trails of approximately 3.5, 9 and 15 kilometres. They start at Acksjöns skola. This gives you a precisely measured loop in Molkom and three options of different lengths in the surrounding area; the distances make it easier to choose a trail based on how far you plan to hike.
You can start the Vildmarksleden in Molkom. It is not accessible to strollers or wheelchairs. Along the trail are the remains of charcoal kilns, where charcoal was once made. The trail through Molkomsmossen crosses a former peat extraction area, where clear traces of the extraction can be seen along the route. Both trails offer insight into different types of work from the past: charcoal production on one, peat extraction on the other.
In the surrounding area, Brattforsheden offers hiking trails with a total length of 75 kilometres. Acksjöleden also includes the ruins of Acksjöhyttan, a blast furnace built in the 17th century for iron production. The combination of circular trails and historic remains makes Acksjöleden an option for anyone looking for a connection to earlier iron production while hiking.
Townscape and cultural history
In Bruksparken, a stone foundation, two storehouses and parts of a landscaped garden remain from Molkom Manor. Near Nyeds kyrka, a slag-stone retaining wall bears witness to Molkom’s early ironworking. These traces add to a townscape that also reflects agricultural activity, Molkom’s history as a bruksort and industrialization.
Between Molkom and Filipstad, on Brattforsheden, lies the Krigsflygfält 16 cultural reserve, a unique World War II site. In Upperud, farm buildings and local heritage buildings form a small, picturesque village ensemble with a clearly visible older character of Molkom. To gain a broader view of local cultural history, compare these preserved architectural traces with the evidence of ironworking.
More experiences and landscapes
Ängsbacka is a course and festival centre in Molkom offering yoga, tantra and meditation. Antik och Design is a 600-square-metre antique shop spread over two floors. Dance events are still held at Upperudslogen; if you’d like to include one in your visit, check the specific dates in advance.
The nature reserves in the surrounding area also offer a variety of highlights. Torskeds naturreservat lies northwest of Molkom, between Älvsbacka hembygdsgård and Lake Östra Örten. It is important for biodiversity, the landscape and recreation. Råglandaberget naturreservat covers a 10.6-hectare forest area. The rock hyperite creates conditions for a rich variety of plant and animal life, and the ridge offers expansive views. The nature destinations therefore differ both in location and in whether you want to focus on a nature reserve, woodland and views, or hiking trails.
