Almunge can be explored through three specific themes: the paintings in Almunge Church, hiking sections of the Upplandsleden, and swimming opportunities at Södersjön and in the indoor pool. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping these highlights separate: a short hike, a bathing spot with several facilities, and an art-historical feature appeal to different interests. This lets you tailor your stay to whether you would primarily like to explore on foot, spend time by the water, or visit the church.
Church and village layout
Almunge consists of a station settlement in the west and a church village in the east. Almunge Church is located on Road 282, opposite Almunge health centre and school. It features wall and vault paintings by Albertus Pictor and his workshop. The paintings combine two different picture surfaces and provide a specific art-historical focus for anyone interested in the church. The layout of the village also offers a brief point of orientation: Almunge encompasses both the western station settlement and the eastern church village.
Hiking sections and stops
The fourth and fifth sections of the Upplandsleden offer different points of reference when choosing a route. The fourth runs between Länna and Almunge; there is a wind shelter and a fire pit by Långsjön. The fifth leads from Almunge to Södersjön and is a short, easy-to-manage hiking section. This makes the difference clear: the fifth is described as short and easy, while the fourth offers a specific rest stop by Långsjön. This can help you choose your preferred section based on the nature of the hike or the opportunity to stop and rest.
Södersjön bathing area has a dry toilet and a picnic table. These are two practical facilities at this bathing spot that may be useful when finding your way around on site.
Swimming at Södersjön and in the indoor pool
Södersjöbadet is located at Södersjön in Almunge and is easy to access. Facilities include a large lawn, a jetty, a swimming pontoon, an accessible bathing ramp, changing cabins and a toilet. Bus 809 is one option for getting there. The walk from the nearest stop, Rånäs vägskäl (Almunge), to the bathing area is about 1.5 km. If you use this connection, factor the walk into your plans and check the timetable before setting off.
The swimming pool at Almunge sim- och sporthall is another option for swimming: it has a pool measuring 12 × 5.5 metres, with a depth of 70 to 170 centimetres. The two options therefore differ in the features described: Södersjöbadet is characterised by its lakeside location and facilities by the water, while the indoor pool has specified pool dimensions and depth. If swimming is important to your trip, you can take these different conditions into account when choosing activities.
