A Viking-era trail marked by an 11th-century runestone: the reconstructed LĂĄngbroleden passes this historic landmark near Snuggan. The trail is a special introduction to getting to know Sollentuna through its landscape and traces of different periods.

Trails through forests and cultural landscapes

Östra Järvafältet Nature Reserve is the part of Järvafältet that belongs to Sollentuna. Fields and pastures, deciduous and coniferous forests, wetlands and lakes give the area its varied character. Marked trails and paths are suitable for hiking, horseback riding and skiing; rest areas, shelters and cafés offer further places to stop along the way. Those looking to experience a variety of landscapes while hiking will also find a distinct character in Rösjöskogen Nature Reserve: Rösjön, with its easily accessible shores, old coniferous forests and open cultural landscapes bearing traces of the Bronze Age, all come together here.

The Rösjön runt trail passes lichen-covered rock surfaces, oaks, beaches and meadows. The long-distance Roslagsleden trail also runs through Rösjöskogen; this section is marked in orange. Check the trail markings on site. An approximate distance is available for Törnskogen runt: the hiking trail is about 9 kilometres long and runs through the northern and southern Törnskogen nature reserves. Trail conditions can vary by season.

Södra Törnskogen reveals another side of nature: this continuous woodland close to the city has a wilderness feel and includes rock surfaces, old spruce forests and wetlands. If you would rather explore by bicycle, consider the Järva cycle route. It runs through Sollentuna and forms a ring route of up to 70 kilometres between Ulriksdal and Rotebro, connecting urban, cultural and natural areas. Old farms and cultivated land lie along the route; it can be started at several stations around Järvafältet.

Discover the past

Edsbergs slott was built in 1760. Its furniture and interior offer a glimpse of what the house looked like during the Rudbeck family’s nearly 200 years of residence. The castle is open to visitors on Wednesdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 16:00; admission is free. Opening times may change, so check before your visit. At Klasro school museum, visitors can experience a historic school day and try writing in a sand tray. The museum is in Sollentuna’s oldest schoolhouse, built in 1804.

You can encounter another form of historical heritage at Engelska parken: it contains 114 graves and is described as Sweden’s oldest maintained burial ground. Hersby local heritage farm preserves the setting of a typical Uppland farm. Its stone houses and wooden outbuildings date from the 18th and early 19th centuries. A Midsummer celebration is held at the farm every year. Check this year’s dates and visiting arrangements in advance.

At Landsnora mill and sawmill, you can trace the history of technology: the water-powered mill was built around 1630 and is considered Sollentuna’s oldest secular building. Milling resumed there in 1986, and the mill and sawmill are open to the public. During the annual mill days, the water-powered frame saw is also operating and can saw large logs. Dates and operations depend on the annual programme and water conditions, so it is worth checking before your visit.

Culture, seasons and local discoveries

Stallbacken kultur is housed in a former barn and offers art exhibitions and cultural activities. The programme includes Thursday lunchtime events, concerts, performances and Funkisallsång—a welcoming group singalong. The current programme may change; check dates before your visit. Edsbacka market is also an annual event, held in September in Edsvik. Check the exact date before your trip.

If you want to explore Sollentuna in winter, Väsjöbacken offers a different experience from the ski trails on Järvafältet. Väsjöbacken has four ski runs and five lifts, as well as a children’s slope and a fun park with rails and a halfpipe for tricks on snowboards and skis. Facilities may change, so check before your winter trip. Marked, snow-dependent and ungroomed ski trails start near Fäboda or Bögs gård; the green-marked trail is 10 kilometres long.

Bögs gård is a demonstration farm set in a historic agricultural landscape. Visitors can see farm animals such as sheep, calves, pigs, goats, chickens, horses, cats and rabbits. There is a car park nearby, as well as heated shelters and equipped barbecue areas. Visitor facilities may change, so check their current status before setting out.
