South of Nynäshamn, the Lövhagen peninsula lies between Gårdsfjärden and Nynäsviken. Forest, meadows, sea, cliffs and sandy beaches all shape the landscape here. Strandvägen, also known as Ringvägen, runs along the sea to Lövhagen: on one side is coniferous forest, on the other the open sea. Near Kroksundsudden, Kärleksgrottan reveals another distinctive rock formation: the cleft is eight metres high and widens towards the bottom. It is not just the height that matters; its widening shape towards the bottom also defines the impression.

Bathing history and swimming spots

From 1901, Nynäshamn developed into a bathing and spa resort. Trehörningen later became the centre of bathing activities. Between 1906 and 1913, Badhotellet, Parkhotellet, Strandhotellet and a casino were built there. The names of the three hotels and the casino alone give this period a tangible character. The island also has a partly English-style park with tall deciduous trees and large lawns. The park is privately owned but open to everyone.

The swimming spots also differ in the facilities they offer. Nickstabadet has a water slide, a diving tower, beach volleyball and a playground. Hamnviksbadet has a small sandy beach, a grassy area and a bathing jetty. If you would like to use the facilities at Nickstabadet, check which ones are currently available before your visit; individual facilities may change.

Culture between art and everyday history

A former bathhouse is now a cultural venue: Konstpoolen hosts exhibitions, music events and an open studio where everyone can paint. Near Nynäshamn’s fishing harbour, Godsmagasinet combines an exhibition hall with a shop selling art and various kinds of handicrafts. Art can be encountered here in exhibitions, in the studio and through handicrafts.

The Nynäshamns Järnvägsmuseum displays its collection of historic railway vehicles in the locomotive shed. Luddes stuga is considered Nynäshamn’s oldest dwelling. The two places turn the focus to different things: historic railway vehicles on the one hand and an old dwelling on the other. Nynäshamns kyrka is also a cultural destination and a popular excursion spot for summer visitors.

Public celebrations and markets add further highlights throughout the year. The annual public Midsummer celebrations on Midsummer’s Eve, the Heritage Day in September and the traditional Christmas market during Advent are organised by Nynäshamns hembygdsförening and Nynäshamns Folkdansgille. The cultural offering thus ranges from exhibitions and music to recurring events throughout the year.

Trails, water and getting around

There are routes of different types and lengths to choose from for active excursions. Stage 5:1 of the Sörmlandsleden runs for 9.5 kilometres from Kvarnängens IP in Nynäshamn to Vansta in Ösmo. A road cycling route runs from Nynäshamn to Ankarudden on Torö and is about 35 kilometres long. The comparison makes the difference clear: a section of a long-distance hiking trail and a considerably longer road cycling route. Both offer a specific starting point for planning, depending on whether you are interested in the Sörmlandsleden or cycling.

Nynäshamn can be reached from Stockholm by both bus and train. Several boat tours and boating activities, as well as guided city tours, depart from Nynäshamns Gästhamn. The harbour office provides tourist information, brochures and maps. If you are planning a tour, check the latest dates in advance.
