A waterfall at Forsa made it possible to operate a wrought-iron hammer as early as the 17th century. This early industrial phase leads into a history with further chapters in the paper mill and the village of Forsa Bruk. Alongside this, the Forsaån, a wetland and the surrounding landscape form a second theme. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Forsa, these different focal points can provide a concrete starting point for planning your trip.

Industrial history in several stages

Under the leadership of the Indebetou family, Forsa Bruk flourished in the second half of the 18th century and in the 19th century. A nail forge, a wrought-iron hammer, a mill and a sawmill helped Forsa Bruk grow into a village with a school, homes and a shop. Its history therefore encompasses not only work in the businesses, but also the development of the village and its communal and everyday functions.

Several dates help put the paper mill’s history in context: from 1826, Nya Gården became the paper mill’s main estate. Nya Forsa, also called Lilla Forsa, was built in 1827, and Forsa pappersbruk was established between 1828 and 1831. The dates are close together, but refer to different historical roles—a main estate, a building and the establishment of a mill.

Nya Forsa is also linked to a biographical episode: in 1833, Johan Daniel Indebetou (1804–1880) and his wife Beata, née Almgren (1811–1861), lived there as newlyweds. A later turning point followed in 1931: when Forssa Pappersbruk was finally demolished, only the boiler house remained. The historical stages thus span the early wrought-iron hammer, the heyday of Forsa Bruk, the paper mill’s history and its demolition.

The Forsaån and the landscape

The Forsaån drains Lake Tisnaren via Lillsjön near Forsa Bruk and continues on to Lake Bjälken. Southwest of Katrineholm, the area around Forsaån/Lillsjön is surrounded by woodland and agricultural land. The watercourse and land use thus offer two different points of reference for understanding the area’s landscape.

The Svinnäset wetland complex (SE0220341), designated as a Natura 2000 site, lies in the lower reaches of the Forsaån. The thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus), a species that is highly endangered nationally and internationally, is also found in the Forsaån. The nature theme therefore encompasses both a designated wetland and an endangered species in the river.

Close to the Forsaån there are woodland key habitats and swamp forests, as well as meadows and pastures included in the Swedish inventory of meadows and pastures (ängs- och betesmarksinventering). These features add a range of habitats and open spaces to the picture of the river. A 2006 field report also describes a hiking trail in the Forsaån area, within a recreational and cultural landscape. Check that the trail is currently accessible before setting out.

Which focus suits your trip?

To decide whether Forsa suits your cultural or nature interests, the two themes can be easily distinguished. The industrial history spans several periods and the life story of Nya Forsa; the nature perspective follows the watercourse from Svinnäset to the habitats along the Forsaån. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these focal points you want to shape your stay. This gives your search a specific reason for travelling.
