Located on Lake Yngaren, Björkvik offers a mix of church and local history, rural character and swimming spots. When planning, it helps to consider these topics separately: the churches represent different centuries, while the swimming spots each have their own features for a day by the water. This lets you decide which focus best suits your trip.
Churches and history from different centuries
Björkvik Church was built in the contemporary Gothic style of the 19th century. Construction took place between 1872 and 1875. In 1900, the church burned down; it was rebuilt and inaugurated in its present form in 1902. Its present form should therefore be distinguished from the original building and the later reconstruction. To put it in context, it helps to distinguish between architectural style and construction date: “Gothic” describes the building style here, not the church’s age. The 19th-century date shows when Björkvik Church was built, clearly distinguishing the style designation from the medieval period associated with Björkvik Old Church.
Björkvik Old Church is located in Yngersstrand, was built in the 12th century and is now a church ruin. Mangelboden, a small cottage dating from 1620, stands right beside it. A comparison reveals three points in time: the medieval church, the 17th-century cottage, and the parish church, with its construction and rebuilding history spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Tors stenar, also known as Näckensborg, consists of large boulders. The two names refer to the same landscape feature.
Lakes and rural character
Björkvik is located on Lake Yngaren and also provides access to several other lakes. The area has a distinctly agricultural character and includes several large estates. This offers two perspectives for understanding the destination: the lakes as a defining part of the landscape and the area’s agricultural character.
Swimming spots and practical information
At the Björkvik swimming spot near Klubbetorp, jetties, sand, changing cabins and a toilet were added starting in summer 2017. Check the current condition of these facilities before your visit. Fagerön swimming spot has smaller sandy beaches and grassy areas where you can enjoy the sun and your surroundings. The swimming spots therefore offer different features: at Klubbetorp, the facilities listed above are the main attraction; at Fagerön, it is the smaller beaches and grassy areas.
At Fagerön, the car park is about 600 metres from the swimming spot. Take this distance into account when planning and check the parking regulations before setting off. Local conditions can change, so check the current state of the swimming spots before your visit.
