Discover Vollsjö through several specific cultural and literary connections: a Pirate Museum in an old railway keeper’s cottage, a church with medieval origins, and walking routes with different features. As you plan your stay, you can treat local history, literary connections and walking trails as separate focal points rather than combining them into a single tour.

Local History and Landscape

When the railway was built in 1866, the station settlement of Vollsjö developed north of the old town center. It grew up around the marketplace, about 500 meters from the station. This historical development reveals another aspect of the town: as well as the older center, the settlement around the marketplace also shaped Vollsjö’s history.

The Vollsjöån runs west of Vollsjö. For a broader view of the landscape, the Fränninge–Vollsjö area is relevant: it lies in a hilly agricultural landscape crossed by the river. This allows you to distinguish between getting your bearings in the immediate town and exploring the landscape of the wider area.

The Pirate Museum and Literary Connections

The Pirate Museum has been housed in an old railway keeper’s cottage since 1998. In the museum park is the sculpture group “Saga väves på sanningens varp.” It features pirates, Bombi Bitt, Eli and the cat Skorpan. The museum and sculpture group offer different points of interest: one is housed in a historic railway keeper’s cottage, while the other brings together characters associated with pirates.

Literature offers several other points of connection. In Fritiof Nilsson Piraten’s books, Vollsjö is also called Tosterup, Grimsby and Gyllevad. Pumphuset is also one of the places in Vollsjö known from Piraten’s books; it is within walking distance of the Pirate Museum. Wollsjö säteri in Vollsjö is associated with the estate Gottorp in Piraten’s novel “Bock i örtagård.”

These connections are not all of the same kind: the place names are names used in the books, Pumphuset is described as a place known from the literature, and Wollsjö säteri is linked to an estate in the novel. So if you are particularly interested in Piraten’s work, these different connections offer several perspectives on Vollsjö.

Church: Medieval Origins and a Renaissance Tombstone

Vollsjö Church was originally a chapel dating from around the beginning of the 13th century, possibly as early as the late 12th century. The church also contains a 16th-century Renaissance tombstone depicting an almost life-size skeleton. The chapel’s early building history and the tombstone therefore belong to different historical periods.

There is also a connection to literature and film: the church appears in Fritiof Nilsson Piraten’s book “Bombi Bitt och jag” and its film adaptation of the same name. A stay focused on cultural history thus brings together the chapel’s history, a Renaissance tombstone and a literary connection.

Two Walking Routes, Different Ways to Find Your Way

The Pirate Walk through Vollsjö passes seven signs equipped with QR codes. Check that the signs are in place before setting out. Säkra Slingan consists of two circular routes with a total length of 7.6 kilometers. When choosing between the routes, you can compare their stated features: the QR-code signs along the Pirate Walk and the total length of the two circular routes on Säkra Slingan.

The routes offer different ways to plan your outing: the Pirate Walk is described by its sequence of signs, while Säkra Slingan is defined by its circular routes and combined distance. Along with Vollsjö’s cultural and literary connections, they let you choose which themes will shape your stay.
