Äsperöd brings together railway, architectural and industrial history. The station building is classified in the highest category for cultural-historical value in the municipal assessment. Together with the brick buildings, it has helped the village largely retain its original character.
Railways, Bricks and Film
The Ystad–Eslöv railway line was completed in 1866 and had a station in Äsperöd. In the railway era, Äsperöd was one of the larger station settlements. The two statements emphasise different things: the completion year refers to the line, while the classification as a larger station settlement describes the village’s role at the time. Äsperöd’s brickworks was established in 1867, one year after the railway line was completed. The dates provide a chronological reference and mark two distinct subjects: transport and brick production. Trade and the transport of agricultural produce also contributed to Äsperöd’s development, adding the movement of goods to its transport history.
In 1971, Äsperöd was one of the filming locations for Hasse Alfredson and Tage Danielsson’s film “Äppelkriget.” This connection adds a film reference to the village’s history, dating significantly later than the 19th-century building and railway milestones.
Lime Quarrying and Hörjelgården
Deposits of shell limestone in the marsh near Björkeröds gård provided the basis for extensive lime quarrying. The lime was dried, ground and sold as fertiliser. The process, from the deposit through processing to sale, brings the economic context of extraction to life. Unlike the railway history, the focus here is on the raw material and its processing.
A place to visit nearby is Hörjelgården, 1 km south of Äsperöd. This well-preserved Skåne farmstead, enclosed by buildings, dates from the early 19th century. Visitors are welcome year-round: you can explore the farmstead independently or get to know it through activities, courses or school camps. You can decide whether an independent visit suits your plans or whether you’d like to include activities, courses or a school camp. The farmstead, dating from the early 19th century, is older than the railway line completed in 1866 and the brickworks established in 1867. Its courtyard, enclosed by buildings, adds an architectural perspective to the later transport and industrial history: the focus is on the entire farmstead, not a single building.
