Kristianstad has two distinctive sides: the wetlands of Vattenriket and a history that can be traced through its churches, barracks, museums and city layout. Naturum Vattenriket is the gateway to the Kristianstads Vattenrike Biosphere Reserve. The Ă…rummet Nature Reserve is also close to the city centre. This places nature observation and paths by the water alongside exhibitions and historic buildings as different highlights of your trip.
Wetlands and paths around Ă…rummet
At Naturum Vattenriket, you can explore an exhibition and ride the Opteryx. The Årummet Nature Reserve is also home to Utemuseum Årummet: an observation hide with views of the wetlands and the city. Here, views of the landscape and city come together at a specific observation point. The Linnérundan trail runs alongside Årummet, adding a route through the area to this perspective.
You can also explore Kristianstad’s nature-rich side by bike. The Kristianstadsturen starts in the city centre and follows quiet roads through the Skåne countryside. From the route, you can take a detour across the bridge over the Helge å to Naturum Vattenriket. This offers different ways to explore side by side: an exhibition and ride at Naturum, an observation hide at Årummet, and a bike tour that leads from the city centre into the countryside.
City history in buildings and museums
Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka was built between 1618 and 1628 and inaugurated on 8 June 1628. It is considered an example of Christian IV’s architectural style, and its interior and exterior have remained largely unchanged since its inauguration. This gives the architecture a clear historical connection: its construction period and its appearance, preserved to this day, are directly linked.
The cityscape also makes its former fortress character easy to trace. The fortress plan encompassed the entire central city; its layout is still discernible in the street plan and is itself a historic monument. Norreport was originally part of the city fortifications and marked the northern city boundary. Norra kasern was built between 1754 and 1768 and is well preserved inside and out. Its layout, based on the so-called block system, is particularly notable: it is Sweden’s only fully preserved interior layout of this kind. Fyrkappan was built in 1801 as a guardhouse at the northern city gate, Norreport.
The permanent exhibitions at Regionmuseet Kristianstad connect the city’s history with the changing landscapes of Skåne. Several temporary exhibitions are also shown there throughout the year. Kristianstads konsthall is housed in the same building and presents contemporary Swedish and international art in several exhibitions each year. This brings together the history of the city and the landscape, as well as changing art exhibitions, under one roof, while Filmmuseet offers a distinct focus: its exhibition covers events and people in Kristianstad that shaped the early development of feature films.
At Järnvägsmuseet, you can learn about railway history, earlier eras of train travel and historic railway settings. The museum opened at the former Kristianstad Södra railway station. The historic station is therefore part of the museum’s origins; the museum itself looks beyond the history of a single place to explore earlier forms of rail travel.
Tivoliparken: promenades, trees and paths
Tivoliparken was established in the first half of the 19th century. The area between the western side of the fortified city and the Helge å, which had previously flooded at times, was gradually planted with trees and developed as a promenade for residents. The park’s distinctive features include many unusual tree species as well as several old and large trees. Several path networks run through the park; the large Väsenlekplatsen themed playground is also located in its northeastern section. The design thus brings together the historic idea of a promenade, distinctive trees and different areas within the park.
