A free car ferry between Barum and Ivön makes Lake Ivösjön a tangible point of reference for a stay in Barum. The area is also home to the burial of the Woman from Barum almost 9,000 years ago and several nearby nature reserves. You can plan your stay around different interests: archaeology, a ferry crossing or trails on Ivö. When looking for accommodation, consider which of these themes is central to your travel plans.

Ferry and cycling route through the lake district

The free Ivöleden car ferry operates on Lake Ivösjön between Barum and Ivön. If you would like to include both destinations in your plans, the crossing is a practical point of reference; check the timetable before travelling. The “Genom Sjöriket” route reaches the ferry in Barum and offers the option of a detour to Ivön. The “Genom Sjöriket” cycling route follows the main road from Bäckaskog Castle to Barum. It passes through a lake district between Lakes Råbelövssjön, Oppmannasjön and Ivösjön. This gives you two distinct points of reference for planning: one connects Barum with Ivön, while the other runs from Bäckaskog Castle to Barum.

Barum’s archaeological heritage

The Woman from Barum was buried in Barum, Sweden, almost 9,000 years ago. An inscription at the grave identifies the site as the burial place of the prehistoric fisherwoman from Barum. There is also a natural-stone memorial stone there, about 15 metres in diameter. The burial, its description in the inscription and the memorial stone give this archaeological attraction a specific connection to the place.

Another dated episode takes place on the shore of Lake Oppmannasjön: in early summer 1939, farmer Oskar Larsson and farmhand Sven Eriksson carried out earthworks near the shore. The date and the named individuals make this an independent historical detail about the area.

Nature reserves and trails on Ivö

The nearby Ivö klack nature reserve has five marked circular trails, ranging from 2.1 to 5.3 kilometres in length. The different distances give you options for planning your outing. Nearby, the hill Klacken is 130 metres high and offers views across Lake Ivösjön. The circular trails and the lake views offer different highlights within the same nature reserve.

The nearby Ugnsmunnarna nature reserve is on Ivö, a few hundred metres north of the ferry landing. An old field track leads to the shore of Lake Ivösjön; farther north along the shore are the caves known as Ugnsmunnarna. The route to the shore and the caves make up the main attractions here.

The nearby Brinkahagen-Möllerödsnäs nature reserve is one of the richest sites in Northern Europe for ground-dwelling fungi. A trail through each of the two areas invites you to take an easy walk. The nature destinations each offer something different: Ivö klack has marked circular trails and views across the lake; Ugnsmunnarna has a path to the shore and caves; Brinkahagen-Möllerödsnäs offers easy walks and a remarkable diversity of fungi.
