Vittsjö combines ancient beech forests and lakeside trails with the history of the spa town and medieval sites. When choosing where to stay, it is worth considering what you want to do: the hiking trails vary in length and scenery, and there are also opportunities for fishing and specific historical sights. This lets you prioritise nature, culture and waterways according to your own interests before choosing accommodation.

Forests, lakes and nature reserve

East of Lake Vittsjön, the Ubbalt Nature Reserve lies on Verumsåsen. Ancient beech forest dominates the area; places with beeches more than a hundred years old support a rich variety of lichens and mosses. The Skåneleden trail passes through the reserve. Stage 9 of the Skåneleden winds through varied forests to the lake district of Vittsjö. This gives you distinct features to consider when choosing a nature experience: Ubbalt’s ancient beech stands and the forest-rich stage ending in the lake district.

Hiking trails by length and scenery

Vittsjön runt starts at Vittsjö railway station. The walking and hiking trail is 9.3 kilometres long and offers views of Lake Vittsjön; that is roughly ten kilometres. At 7.9 kilometres, Lehultsrundan is shorter and passes through spruce and mixed forests, clear-cuts and old fields. The difference is not just the length: views of the lake are part of the Vittsjön runt route, while Lehultsrundan crosses several types of landscape.

For a longer loop, Vieåleden is another option at about 11 to 14 kilometres. The seasonally open circular trail passes through deciduous and coniferous forests and along rapids and ravines. Check the opening period in advance if you plan this hike; both the length and seasonal status of Vieåleden are important planning considerations.

Spa town history and medieval traces

Vittsjö’s history as a spa town dates back to the 19th century. Vittsjöborg was built in the 1330s and destroyed by fire about 30 years later. These topics highlight different aspects of history: Vittsjö’s development as a spa town and the construction and destruction of a medieval site.

Along Vieåleden lies the medieval castle ruin of Skeingeborg, known for its octagonal ring wall. It is considered a unique ring-wall ruin, about 900 years old, set amid nature. Along the route, you can therefore take in both its landscape of forests, rapids and ravines and a distinctive architectural feature.

Fishing and regional orientation

The Vittsjön fishing area includes Lillasjö, Högholmsjön, Oresjön, Mellomsjön, Pickelsjön, Lehultasjön, Hårsjön, Gustav Adolf-ån and part of Vieån. Fishing permits for Vittsjön are available from Vittsjöhallen and Vittsjö Camping. If you plan to fish as well as hike, you can make the waterways a focus of your stay.

Vittsjö has good connections via the Pågatågen trains; the town of Hässleholm is nearby. In the wider travel region, the Vittsjö-Verum parish is in northern Skåne, on the border with Småland and about 30 kilometres north of Hässleholm. This regional context complements the local trails, landscapes and historical themes.
