The red-brick building at Sösdala railway station dates from 1863 and has been preserved in almost its original condition. Together with the railway station settlement, which embodies the ideal of a settlement from the early railway era, it makes this period tangible in the townscape. At the same time, Sösdala retains the character of a village shaped by small farms: numerous farmsteads and other buildings are well preserved. The town can be reached by regional trains operated by Pågatågen.

Village Character and Architectural History

The railway station settlement and the preserved farmsteads show two different sides of Sösdala: its roots in the early railway era and the village’s small-farm character. The station building connects local history with a tangible architectural landmark—a red-brick building dating from 1863 that remains almost in its original condition. Visitors interested in historic townscapes can explore both the railway station architecture and the rural buildings.

Castle, Musical Memorial and Older History

Baron Christian Barnekow had Vannaröd Castle built at the end of the 19th century. He had it constructed as a copy of the childhood home of his Scottish wife, Agnes Sofia Montgomery. The choice of this model is a specific part of the castle’s history. Today, Vannaröd Castle is used as a restaurant and event venue.

A statue on the esplanade in the centre of Sösdala commemorates Otto Lindblad, who is also known as the “Father of Student Song.” Near Sösdala is Vätteryd burial ground, the largest and best-preserved burial ground in Skåne with upright stones. It includes both ship settings and square stone settings, as well as traces of settlements dating from the Neolithic period. The different forms give this archaeological site more than one historical point of interest.

Landscape and Seasons

The Maglö Oaks nature reserve near Sösdala is a gently rolling pasture landscape with old oak trees. Some of these trees are more than 500 years old. There is parking opposite Maglö Manor; a simple field path leads a short way into the reserve, and the pasture is easy to walk across. You can get to know the landscape through both its ancient oaks and its open pastures.

On the outskirts of Sösdala, near Vannaröds Ängskrona, many night-scented stocks bloom in June and July. The intensity of the bloom varies. These months are therefore the right time to visit if you would like to see the flowers there.

Walking Trails and Getting Around

The Skåneleden trail runs through Sösdala. A 3-kilometre illuminated circular trail starts at Vannaröd Castle Park. A walking trail passes Vannaröd Castle and continues to Lillsjödal, where you can spend the night in a wind shelter. Sösdala is about three kilometres from the Lillsjödal campsite. As trails and wind shelters can change, it is advisable to check both before planning your trip.

Hovdala is another point of reference for hikers: if you walk about 7.5 kilometres north from Sösdala, you will reach the unique Hovdala trail system near Nösdala and Brönnestad. The approximate distance and direction help you locate this destination without confusing it with the trails right in town.

Bosarpasjön in Different Seasons

Bosarpasjön has been an important recreational area since the mid-20th century, and several of its facilities are well preserved. In summer, there is a kiosk at the bathing area and a bathing jetty about 20 metres long. Facilities also include a miniature golf course, a shower, a barbecue area, toilets and nearby parking. Visitor facilities may change, so it is helpful to check what is currently available before your visit.

During very cold winters, ice skating on Bosarpasjön may be an option, provided the ice is safe. The kiosk and bathing jetty are part of the summer offering, while skating depends on very cold winters and safe ice. The activities therefore differ not only according to personal interests but also clearly by season.
