Laxå is a railway town with residential and institutional buildings dating from around the turn of the century along Järnvägsgatan and by Laxå railway station. Together with Laxå Manor, the Laxå Industrial Museum and Ramundeboda Church, these offer several ways to explore the town’s history. If you are planning a stay with a cultural focus, you can consider the railway town, manor and church as distinct themes.

Local history and church architecture

The Laxå Industrial Museum is located in a side wing of Laxå Manor, built in 1798. This places the museum in a historic building, while the buildings along Järnvägsgatan and by the railway station convey the character of a railway town.

Ramundeboda Church adds a different chapter of history, both in time and place. It was originally built by Lake Bodarnesjön on the site of a former Antonine monastery; since 1899, it has stood in central Laxå. Its original location by the lake and its current location in the town centre mark two distinct stages in its history.

The church is made of wood and has a tar-shingled roof and tar-shingled walls. Baroque features and numerous depictions of angels add to these distinctive architectural characteristics. The furnishings also have a clear historical date: the Passion altar, pulpit and baptismal font have been in place since 1688. The church thus offers both architectural features and specific historic furnishings.

Nature and activities

If you would like to include nature alongside the historic buildings, Midsommarberget is a municipal nature reserve in central Laxå. Its status as a reserve and its location in town give it a different focus from the historic buildings. This gives you two distinct themes to explore during your stay: cultural history and nature.

Laxå also has a municipal bathing area at Lake Borasjön. The bathing area has been adapted for accessibility. This specific feature may be useful when choosing between local options.

Another activity is available at the recreation area, with its 9-hole disc golf course in gently undulating terrain. Disc golf adds a separate outdoor activity to complement the town’s history and nature reserve.

Plan your routes and arrival

From Laxå railway station, a hiking trail follows the Ålands Canal to Bergslagsleden or Munkastigen. When choosing a route, consider the starting point at the station, the route along the canal and the two named connecting trails. You can choose based on which of these hiking trails you would like to connect with.

A 7.2-kilometre floodlit training track also runs between Laxå and Röfors. Before using it, check the current route and condition if these details are important to your plans.

Timetables, a map, and information about opening hours and accessibility are available for Laxå railway station. If you plan to start your hike from the station, check the timetable for your travel date. This will help you coordinate your arrival with your chosen starting point, without assuming a specific connection.
