Abandoned shelters and dynamite stores in a shale quarry, along with a long row of historic lime kilns: Degerhamn can be explored on hiking trails and through the traces of its industrial history. Quarries, factory ruins and landscapes tell different sides of the area's story. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the trail features and individual cultural and historical sites separately—they offer different ways to shape your stay.

Hiking Trails and Quarries

Bergstigen is about five kilometres long and divided into three stages marked by red arrows. The trail leads into a shale quarry with abandoned shelters and dynamite stores. Its approximate length and marked stages provide clear guidance for the route, while the traces of quarrying also reveal its historical significance.

Kalkbrottsleden offers a different perspective. The hiking trail crosses Stora alvaret to limestone quarries, where several loop trails are available. The options described therefore differ: Bergstigen is characterised by its approximate length and marked stages, while Kalkbrottsleden crosses the alvar and offers a choice of loop trails at its destination. You can plan your hike around the features mentioned for each trail without treating the routes as the same.

At Adolfshamn, there is a bathing spot alongside a beach of rounded stones. This combination adds a waterside location to the hiking and quarry themes. When choosing, you can also consider whether your stay should focus more on the route, industrial history or a beachside bathing spot.

Waterscapes and Views

Several places in Degerhamn show how former extraction sites are connected with water and the landscape. Fågelsjön is a lake formed in an old shale quarry belonging to Degerhamns kalkbruk. Stensjön is a former limestone quarry that was filled with water in the 1950s; it has a rich variety of birdlife. In both cases, the former use of the site is part of its present-day description, but their stories differ in terms of the type of quarry and when it was formed.

From the viewpoint at Kalkbrottssjön, you can look out over the alvar and Cementa's large disused limestone quarry, which is slowly filling with water. Here, the focus is on the landscape view, while Fågelsjön and Stensjön are each shaped by their origins as water-filled quarries. For those interested in nature and landscapes, these details offer different points of interest: birdlife, views across the alvar or the history of a former extraction site.

Lime Kilns and Industrial History

Degerhamn's hiking landscape includes quarries and several factory ruins from 300 years of industrial history. At the Fältugnsområde of Degerhamns kalkbruk, 20 field kilns for burning lime stand in a long row. The kilns' repeated form and arrangement make this evidence of lime production a distinctive destination in its own right.

Kalkgata is also part of this history: in the past, limestone and shale were transported by rail from the quarries to the field kilns. This adds the story of material transport to the row of kilns. At Navet, there is a pavilion with information about Degerhamn's industrial history, various types of stone to explore and a car park.

A tall chimney marks the ruins of Ölands alunbruk, founded in 1804. On the site of the former manor house belonging to the works, artists Christer Jansson and Elisabeth Sivard created a work from stone. It is a tribute to art and to the people who work and have worked with stone. The ruins, chimney and artwork thus bring the industrial past and artistic engagement with stone together under the same theme, without conflating their different meanings.

Museums and Other Traces

Objects and photographs at Degerhamns hembygdsmuseum showcase Degerhamn's industry, trade and shipping. The museum complements the evidence found in the landscape with themes from everyday life and local history. Those especially interested in the maritime side will find another specific detail at the museum lighthouse Ingrunden: it has a lantern from the Utgrunden lighthouse in the Kalmarsund.

Konstens geologiska trädgård is also a cultural point of interest, showcasing geological art in an inspiring setting. Taken together, Degerhamn's attractions range from lime production and stone transport to trade, shipping and geological art. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose whether to focus mainly on the hiking trails and landscape features or to seek out the different traces of industrial and local history.
